Lady Griz won a close one today.

Great game, very close all the way. Both point guards, Sonya and Mandy played great today.

Sonya had her best game of the year. Do not have the stats but she scored in double figures today. I think it was 10 points. Her two 3's late in the game pretty much won it for the Lady Griz. Her ball handling was supurb today. Handled the Long Beach State pressure real well. One time she was just clobbered but she kept her composure and took down the floor. Her experience playing the matchup zone defense pretty much kept Mandy off the Floor at the end.

Mandy played around 20 minutes her first time out. Scored 3 points, had around 4 assists, and maybe only 1 or 2 turnovers. Would have played more minutes if it wasn't for the play of Sonya Rogers and Rogers experience with the zone defense. Mandy though will be getting more minutes as she gets more play time as her offensive skills are really needed.

Dana Conway had an excellent game. Sparked a first half rally with 9 points in the first and finished with around 12 or 13 points.

Katie Edwards scored around around 11, 12, or 13 points.

Lady Griz were outrebounded in this game, even though they kind of stayed even with Long Beach State in the second half. Long Beach has 2 girls around 6' 3" and they were quick. Rebounding was quite tough for the Lady Griz. But, Sara Gale and Jody Mcleod did well rebounding in the second half. Mcleod got a couple of offensive rebounds and scored late in the second half that really helped.

Now about Vicki Austin. She was one hell of a good point guard. Back in the '80s, Long Beach State was one of the premier women's basketball teams and Vicki Austin sat on the bench not getting any playing time. The Long Beach State coach kind of guided her to check out the Lady Griz, and she came here. Her first year here, playing along with Shannon Cate during Shannon's fresman year, Vicki lead the Lady Griz to the Big Sky championship, and a first round win over Fullerton State.
Next year before season started, She blew out her knee and career over. It just makes me wonder that if she didn't blow out her knee, the Lady Griz would have had a legitimate chance to get to sweet 16 with her, Shannon Cate, and Jean McNulty. Vicki was quick, fast and a smooth operator at the point guard.

Someday, hopefully, Lady Griz will get another point guard just like her. Maybe Sonya Rogers will become that point guard. Or maybe Mandy, but Sonya plays point whenever both are on the floor at the same time.

Where is Vicky Austin today? I recall that she was on the staff at Hellgate (I think). She was a great kid.

Like to know myself. Wonder if Selvig could get her to join the Lady Griz as an assisntant.
