Kyle Owens

Beasley 2, the guard that grew 7 inches during Covid or the other 6"3" Cali guard Griz signed should solve most of these issues. They'll be fresh and should be pretty decent their first two years.......after that?

I also expect a couple more Wetzel, Kriegmont type guys to show up for a season and then decide Montana isn't the state they want to live in after all.

Are we all really talking about the most successful BSC men's basketball program the past 25+ years here?

Got to admit, this loss hurts me some. Owens has been my favorite Griz, since arriving. I wish him well. Just hope, he doesn't come back to haunt us. He's got a lot of upside potential.

I'm thinking pretty hard, how this decision came about?

Thinking of DeCuire's past management of players, who weren't buying in, even considering leaving, or falling short of expectations, DeCuire cut their minutes, or no playing time.

That seemed to be the case, until Anderson's injury. I'm guessing, Kyle said something, or hinted the possibility of transferring, for whatever reasons. I doubt, he did anything wrong. I feel, he's a high character person.

I'd love to hear Kyle's side of things. I'm thinking, future players contemplating a change, might be better off to put it aside, until the season is officially over. That's, if playing time is a priority to a player. Kyle's role and minutes, were reduced rather rapidly. I've only heard of people speak highly of Kyle.

Right now, we don't know much. I can only go by past players looking to leave, they're role was reduced. I have a feeling, that's the case here.

I wish Kyle the best. If he transfers closer to home, we'll at least know, he missed being near home. I honestly hope that's the case.

My sentiments exactly.

Good call, Verbal Commits has Jack Wetzel entering the transfer portal also. GO GRIZ!!!!

Kyle could not guard on the perimeter...effectively ruling out any chance to play the 3, nor did he have the consistency to knock down open 3's or the ability to come off pin down screens. He didn't have the ball skills to beat his man off the dribble or play offensively on the perimeter.

I totally understand what you are saying, but on the flip side, was there any Big Sky “3” that could handle Kyle in the post? I am a big believer in basketball math. Is there a scenario where Kyle is doing more damage
to an opposing 3 in the post than the opposing 3 is doing to him on the perimeter? Were our 3’s this year outplaying/outscoring the opponent to the point where the 3 was an advantage to us?

And how does the calculus change if we actually played a zone from time-to-time?

I am not shocked, but am sad to see him go. This is the new NCAA-normal. If you don't start or get the PT you want, it's easier to bail elsewhere. He clearly has more talent than Mack Anderson, and I don't think Travis has ever been successful developing Post players.

In Owen's case, I think, he kind of got shafted, over something very minor. He should have played considerably more minutes.

I appreciated Kyle taking charges on defense, sacrificing his health and well-being for the benefit of the team. I also liked his enthusiasm out there. It seemed genuine and was downright contagious. I wish him great success wherever he ends up. :thumb:

Sure. DCH is a much better lateral athlete, capable of guarding on the perimeter and getting off down screens. He is also a much better defender in ball screens and can hard hedge and recover much better than Kyle. Additionally, he offered some semblance of rim protection. He was great at walling at the rim from help side, noted by his 17 blocks compared to KO's 1. Credit to KO for taking charges tho. Offensively, DJ did a much better job at spacing the floor, shooting 44% from 3 on 22-50. KO shot 24% on 11-46. I think he showed better ability to attack off the perimeter closeout and beat his defender to the rim.

Kyle's inability to guard multiple positions doesn't mean DJ is the answer. He is definitely limited offensively and is too small to guard the 5 position as well. For sure not a 3, he has the skillset of a 4, but his ability to guard multiple actions off the ball and hard hedge/switch on the perimeter is what gave him the edge in minutes over KO this season imo.
