This is not about Hauck. This is not about winning football games this year. This is about the University of Montana. President Engstrom is the only "leader" mentioned in this entire thread, and he will rise or fall based upon the leadership he has demonstrated here, and hopefully continues to demonstrate.
I am amazed at my own thoughts. For many years I have felt exactly like Alfa, Growler and one other poster, I forget his name.
I thought we had and have a very clean football team and athletic program. Silky clean!
What thief, killer, rapist, etc. has been found guilty from our football team and athletic program during the past few years? I will agree we have had drunk driving episodes and the tasing situation. I will admit the football coaches have had to reprimand players but I can't find the filth as stated by others like Gwen Florio and you holier than thou types.
I had hope the angry mob types would sit back and show some cool. Guilty as stated by a female and printed by Gwen and the Missoulian! This provides proof? Kidding right?
The dumbest rape situation occurred via the Saudi student fiasco that hero Rolls Royce allowed! Your famous fearless leader!
This firing is a simple feel good cover our ass type of crap that will look good to the lack of brain types.

Seems to me that the horrible behavior Q Free and his bunch was a mere "few years ago" but many forget all of that because Jimmy Wilson was acquitted and made the most of his second chance. Most Griz athletes are great kids who keep their nose clean and are model citizens -- and good students, too. But that misses the point. It may not be fair, but perception is reality and the perception is that the football program has lost its moorings as part of an outstanding university. I am no fan of Ms. Florio or the Lee newspapers and their approach to these issues, but the integrity of the univeristy always comes before the concern about the success of any athletic program. Dr. Engstrom's job is to protect the integrity of the university, and he has stepped up to try to turn around the perception of a program out of control. In time, we will learn whether he has also figured out how to preserve the proud tradition of Grizzly football. In the meantime, we should all buy season tickets, support the athletic programs, and scream our guts out at football games (as I have for the past two decades). But we should not forget that the university as a whole comes first, and we need a university president who is willing to stand up in order to protect the university as a whole. So BOOM back at you.

I think Engstrom had no choice but to fire Pflu. I am not that sure about O Day with the exception O Day hired Pflu. The off the field troubles have increased significantly since Pflu became coach.
Personally, i do not think the players respected or feared Pflu as a disciplinarian. They may have liked him as a coach though. I remember an interview with Pflu during spring practice in his first year. He spent most of the time talking about the players having to have "fun" out there. I thought this was pretty odd.
Remember Roper coming off the field in one game late in the season and got right in Pflu's face for a heated arguement. Roper was in the very next series. I suspect if Roper had done that with BH he would have been benched or even sent to dress out.
Pflu is a decent guy and a good football technician. His comments about JJ were ill advised at best and may have been the tipping point for Engstrom. I think Engstrom came to the conclusion Pflu did not have the skill sets to manage and discipline the team both on and off the field. That left only one solution which was to terminate him.
I do find it odd the AG was one of the major cheerleaders for Pflu, Now it appears he is anti Pflu. I wonder what tipped AG's opinion?

Rocky, it sounds like things somehow got off track in this process. The meeting was first scheduled for Monday morning but was changed to Thursday. Engstrom gave notice first thing in the morning but waited for a formal announcement until around noon. Maybe this was done to give Pflu and O day some time to let the information out to their supporters.
Engstrom could not be specific for legal reasons. I am sure he was well advised by the attorney on what to say and what not to say.
I have had to terminate employees from time to time for various reasons including theft, carelessness and job fit. One thing my attorney always told me is to be non specific and to decline to comment on the reason. I had also been advised on how to handle inquiries about previous eomplyees. I was advised to say they had worked for my company and provide dates of employment if asked.
