kudos to robin selvig

anybody who follows this board knows i have been critical of selvig for not opening up his recruiting to more out-of-state players and--most especially--more african-american players. it didn't seem to me possible that a modern-era college program could compete on a national level by when it restricted its recruits to in-state white kids--especially a state as sparsely populated as montana.

and yet:

1. a team on the verge of cracking the national top-25 starts five kids from montana, with only one out-of-state player (sara gale) key to the team's success;

2. montana's reserves--cote, lohman, beck, gale, robison and snead--would probably be the fourth best team in the conference;

3. other teams may be "re-building" with young players, a la monana state, but our top 25 team is already built on a foundation of sophomores--guardipee, rogers, lohman and morales;

4. as with all selvig-coached teams, individual players continue to show dramatic improvement season-to-season and week-to-week, with guardipee, cote and lohman falling into that category this year, and lauren beck on the verge of stardom in my opinion.

so, congratulations to robin for another outstanding coaching job, and...oh, by the way...for recognizing and tapping into one of the state's great resources--it's native american talent. we wouldn't be where we are without it.

Here, here.

Montanan's can be proud that a team that wears Montana jerseys can compete with anyone in the country and, guess what, the players are actually from that state!

For this reason and many others Robin Selvig is one of the best of all time, but he can't coach forever. I just hope the next coach doesn't start looking out of state.

Anyways, I don't think a negro lineup gives the kind of advantages to a women's college team as it does to one in the NBA. They have to be honest and play real basketball rather than putting on a slightly regulated dunk contest.

I had been somewhat critical of RS in the past because he seemed to be be developmentally stunted in his approach to the game. I can't tell you how many times he called his famous "high/low" which resulted in walking the ball up the court. He didn't either believe he the talent to run or didn't know or like to coach that kind of game. Whatever the case, kudos to him (and the team of course) for playing an up-tempo game. For the first time in many years I believe that they have the type of play that could win at least one post-season game. And maybe the talent to win two... I sure am excited to wait and see!

I have said it before. Congrats to Robin Selvig and his staff. I am amazed so many people on here have been critical of his style of coaching. Anyone who can put over 600 wins on the board and do it with mainly in-state talent shows the type of coach he is. He recruits winners and that is what he is.

Someone just posted that he can't coach forever. That is true but I think he has a strong staff that could take over and not skip a beat. Shannon Cate-Schweyn would be a great replacement should Robin retire. They have built a quilty program that is respected around the country. So many teams will not come and play here in fear of losing. The LA Tech coach stated that after they edged MT in the NCAA tourney here a few seasons ago.

Again great job to the Lady Griz, keep up the great season

Selvig is in middle 50s. Likely be haed coach for next 10 years.

So, which assistant coach to likely get the job when Robin retires may be decided on their husbands job prospects.

Head assistant coach Annette-Whitaker Rocheleau will likely be here until she retires. Her husband could or likely be paid more than her and be harder for Annette to go elsewhere. Plus, by time Robin retires, Annette could be close to retiring also.

Assistant coach Shannon husband is just an assistant coach for Griz track. I would say if any of the assistant coaches to leave elsewhere and take her husband along, would be Shannon. How long Shannon stays could very well be determined by how long her husband stays as assistant coach of Track at UM and whether he can take over head coach of the track team. If Brian leaves somewhere else, He could drag Shannon with him, and we would lose a very good future head coaching candidate. Or, if Shannon finds a head coaching job somewhere, Brian would likely follow. Shannon would be the most likely assistant coach to leave before Robin Retires.

Assistant coach Trish Duce may likely be the one to survive here long enough to become head coach, if Robin decides to coach until retirement age of mid-60s.

Anyway, I hope Robin stays as coach for a long time, and he can keep the same assistant coaches around.

The next coach will most likely be Shannon so I don't think you have to worry about going out-of-state.
