krysko's opportunity cost

every choice in life carries with it an opportunity cost--the foregone benefits of the path not taken--and if krysko foregoes us for the peps, he will have paid an opportunity cost so high both in terms of money and personal satisfaction that i would be utterly baffled by the decison. money: true he'd get a one year punch-up in salary, but his committment to pepperdine might actually cost him the $800,000 to one mill deal he could get after another year here. satisfaction: he's started something big here at his home-state alma mater, and i'm totally blind to the satisfaction anybody could get from failing to complete that job while bringing to athletic prominence a school that boasts the despicable ken starr on its faculty. family (krysko's got that), money, personal satisfaction--what more is there to life?

that's assuming he has another great year here and we make the tourney again. things worked out well for him the past two years. remember we didn't win the reg. season title, so while it's impressive that K got us in the tourney the 'hard' way, you also have to look at the good fortune. psu beat us twice, but lost to wsu at home or that may have never happened. and winning at nau was impressive, but is very difficult to do and i don't want to have to do that again.
he very well may not get us into the tourney again next year or the year after or the year after and it's not because he not a good coach, but because things just don't always work out even if you're the best team in the league. he may, or may not, be a hot commodity in three years, but he'll be a good coach and there are a lot of good coaches out there that just haven't got their break and this may be K's break. leading pepperdine to the same success as he did here will be a bigger boost to his career than his success at um has been. also, turning down an offer like this will make future chances slimmer, because no one wants to offer someone a job and then get told no thanks.
bottom line. sure i'd love to keep him around, but i wouldn't blame K a bit for leaving and wish him well in whatever he decides to do.

Krysko has started something at UM that could grow into the future. With all the press he has received it has put him on the national radar and, in my opinion, he is in a catch 22. If he doesn't at least look at the opportunities presented now they may not come again but going to the WCC may not be a move up other than salary. I believe that no one should ever turn down an opportunity to research other situations but it has to be the right fit and no one can say that but Larry.

That may be true but also remember his recruits aren’t even in place yet. The players he went out and brought in mostly have not made up the starting five yet. To me the true test of a coach is to see how his team does that is full of his players that he brought in and he coached and taught.

I disagree. The true test of a man, coach or not, is best summed up as follows:

"It’s easy to grin when your ship comes in
and you've got the stock market beat
but the man worthwhile is the man who can smile
when his shorts are too tight in the seat."

Thank you, Judge Smails...

There has been so much talk about LK and this job, that I really don't even mind if he does leave. I just want this shit to be over. It's not like Pepperdine is an offer he cant refuse. If he decides that he's better off there than here, then I don't mind if he leaves. The sooner he leaves, the sooner the U can find a coach that really wants to be here. I just don't want this to affect our recruits at all, because there's a good class coming in.

Get use to it. The anxiety over whether or not a successful Griz coach will move is like "Groundhog Day" and you're Bill Murray. It happened with Jud Heatcote, Stew Morrill, Joe Glenn, Mike Montgomery and half a dozen coaches I don't remember. And it will happen again and again. UM is an entrance level job, a Class C Rookie League club if you will, where coaches mature their way into bigger, better paying gigs.

oh, i'm used to it and fully prepared to lose krysko. just that this move at this time makes no sense to me for reasons i've explained. i'd feel the same if i'd just dropped in from mars to advise him.

Other than Selvig?

These one year contracts are a coaching bane. Not one coach worth anything would say that was a draw.

part of the problem could be being in a one-bid conference. UM has to win the tournament to get in the NCAA. Even a regular season title is not enough. If a coach from the Big Sky wants to move up he needs to be in that NCAA tournament and conference tournaments are a crapshoot even if you have the best overall team.

If your coach did not make the NCAA next year does his stock fade? probably. So I think you have to strike while the Iron is hot.

The BSC has one automatic berth in the finals, just like the other conferences.
The rest of the positions are allocated by a selection committee. The Missouri Valley put four teams into the playoffs this year but that does not imply any auto positions next season.

I agree in principle with your argument, Poke, but in this case it doesn't really carry the mail. The WCC has historically been a one-bid conference as well. There was a brief period in which there was an at-large selected from the WCC, but it's far from a certainty.

City I agree with your posts on this topic, but wonder why you insist on dropping a political comment in....it doesn't strengthen your arguement, and frankly adds nothing to the post. :twocents:

Right now, the only way the WCC is a two bid conference is if Gonzaga doesn't win the conference tournament.

One thing that I don't think I have seen mentioned here is the fact that he has one thing that is nipping at his heels. His wife is not too particularily fond of Montana. We all know how this can affect decision making for a man. At least we know now who wears the pants in the K family. I would like to see him at least start to finish what he started here, but you have to look at it this way too, he might not like being the big fish in the small pond. If he goes down to Malibu he is just a basketball coach and not a God like Missoula has been looking at him. These kids are going to be fun to watch and even more fun with a great coach teaching and mentoring, but Larry has to do what is best for his family. On that note, PLEASE STAY LARRY!!!
