The University of Montana has added an outstanding junior college player to its program, announced Grizzly head men’s basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak.

Virgil Matthews, a 6-3, 195-pound guard from Centralia Community College (Washington) has accepted a scholarship to play for the Grizzlies. He will be a junior at UM.

“We feel very fortunate to have Virgil join our program,” Krystkowiak said. “I am impressed with his passing ability and how he approaches the game. He will be a solid teammate for our players. He’s a solid citizen and a welcome addition to our program.”

Matthews averaged 22.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game last season for the Trailblazers. He shot 71% from the free throw line.

Last year Matthews was the MVP of the Western Division of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWACC) and led that conference in scoring. He was ranked fifth in the conference in assists and ninth in rebounding.

He was also first team All-Region and first team All-NWACC and led his team to the league championships.

“He is a very good person and does his best in and out of the classroom,” said Dave Klovdahl, Matthews’ coach at Centralia College. “He will represent himself well and will have a positive attitude, and do whatever it takes to contribute. On top of that, he is a tremendous competitor.

“He has a tremendous scoring mentality and he is an exceptional passer,” Klovdahl said. “He sees the court well and that will be a pleasant attribute to the Montana program.”

Matthews prepped at Federal Way High School in Washington.

If this is THE GUY we are looking for as point guard, I can see good things for our men's basketball team next season.

This guy looks to be able to dish it, grab it, and score it.

It is looking better. Now, we just need to know whether he can play at this level. Like most JC transfers, they do tend to take time adjusting to the higher level. But hopefully by conference and near the end of the season when it really counts, he will be awesome.

That's good news as that is a positon that was thin. Kennedy said he planned to play true frosh Matt Martin at the point. I wonder now if Krysko will redshirt him?

How does someone of this ability fly under the radar and not get picked up during the early recruiting process?
