krysko: part one

okay, we all know we've got someone special in krysko. two years, two ncaa appearances, and an incoming recruiting class that could be one of the best in the history of the school.

the guy can coach.

the guy can recruit.

his kids turn in a collective 3.2 g.p.a., a fact that does not go unnoticed by the commentators during a national telecast, which reminds you that krysko too was an honors student.

not only this, his teams seem to play better in big games. we make a great comeback after a disastrous start against washington in the ncaa tournament last spring, and this year, we go into flagstaff and and completely dismantle the lumberjacks in a championship game not nearly as close as the 13-point victory indicates. this win ups krysko's record in big sky playoff games to 5-0.

as if this weren't all enough, this is no carpetbagger coach we're talking about here. he's OUR guy, homegrown, a graduate of our own school, the most decorated player in the history of OUR beloved griz bb program.

if the guy has one weakness, it's those ties. (oh! those ties! but that can be fixed.)

if ANY other school ANYWHERE in the country found themselves in this coaching situation, they'd be thinking-acting-doing ANYTHING they POSSIBLY could to figure out a way to keep THEIR guy.

but at that one remaing school in the entire country, montana, we simply shrug our shoulders and say, well, shucks, he sure is a good coach, he'll be moving on soon--this year? next year? two years?--who knows when, who knows where--wyoming? no he'll never go to wyoming! pac ten? n.b.a.?-- but he'll be moving on, we'll sure miss you larry, we wish you the best, COME BACK AND SEE US SOMETIME!!

the irony here is, the very qualities that made krysko such a great player, and now such a great coach--his tenacity, his smarts, his willingness to overcome the odds of playing against much superior talent in the n.b.a.--are the very qualities we should be demonstrating right now in our efforts to keep him.

but aren't.

the irony is that if krysko were one of us in this situation, he'd figure out a way to keep that coach. he wouldn't feel any inferiority complex about being from montana. he'd know that montana is a special place--one of the most special in the entire country, a place you never get out of your system-- and that as a division 1 team, could compete against the best in the country. he'd be tenacious. he'd develop a strategy. he'd overcome the odds.

he'd get the job done.

but not us.

in a future part two of this post, i will lay out a strategy for keeping him.

Will there ever be anothe Selvig? Great coach, local hero, loves the program and the atmosphere more than the ambition or money, becomes icon for the ages by staying?

city-well done! Hopefully Krysko is in a position financially where he can afford to stay at the U of M and continue to work on the truly amazing revival of GRIZ hoops! Unless this state changes it's 2nd class attitude towards coaching contracts, we are going to have to hope that Krysko's values place a greater premium on continuing his incredible run here, staying "home" and and providing geographical stability for his family. He has done an exceptional job and will be called on by other programs. I wonder if anybody on the Board of Regents has considered the financial gain to the UofM when you average 5500 fans per game versus 3300.

I just wish he stays until the time is right for him to leave. I dont know when that time is or what is going to happen but we will just have to see. I could see Tinkle leaving missoula for a head coaching job somewhere so if you think about it, Krysko leaves and we get Tinkle as head coach. Tinkle leaves and we are still left with Kryscko until he leaves.......

UCLA or Gonzaga is the only thing on my mind at this point

Swilly,

Don't bet that $20 youwon on it being those two teams, the NCAA Selection committee has a history of making people scratch their heads on Selection Sunday. If we do have one of them, please let it be the Zags, UCLA is soooo much more athletic than GU.

GB,

You have to stop jumping on me for everything, I realize that we might not play the Zags or UCLA but it looks like that those might be some of the prime opponents as of right now. I would rather see Gonzaga as well, we just match up better with that whole team and it would be a good game.

And it wouldnt be sweeter that my own team beat the overrated Zags.....

two things.

when i promised part two, i did not promise it for tonight. i have several ideas, but want to research them thoroughly.

but, second, there is a job out there that could open up for krysko even before i finish my research: marquette.

their current coach, tom crean, is the number one choice of many to take over at indiana. he's young (40), has a keen basketball mind, and has recruited exceptionally well in the midwest.

of course, larry played for the bucks, and met his wife there. if marquette came calling, i'm sure krysko would listen. after all, marquette is now a member of the big east, and there's no greater stage in college basketball (after the a.c.c.) than the big east.

Talk to us City. Pepperdine wants him bad and is prepared to pay the big bucks. All of your reasons for someone else to covet him are valid. A good showing at the dance only increases our anxiety. If something is to be done it has to happen soon.....Talk to us City!

One thing the Griz do have going for them is Larry is a Montanan and loves the Griz... and always will, even when he coaches someplace else. I'm sure, though he played years ago, (80s/early 90s??? before the knee thing) he probably still made more/had more money than people like Glenn, Blaine, Hauk, and other Griz coaches (all sports) coming into their coaching careers at U of M. Will money motivate Larry? Yes, but I think his drive and competiveness he has will bring him to a bigger program over the money. Chanllenges...

okay, this thread was back then. before we got the twelve seed. before we beat nevada. before we woke up one morning to find we were america's darlings, touted by dick vitale for the upset of the day, written up in the new york times and usa today. before krykso's face was plasterd all over the media like a wanted man in arizona and pepperdine. before we'd played the extra game that brought in another $750,000 to be divided up among conference schools. before i laid out a plan to keep krysko and elevate the salaries of his assistants.

the result? one p.m. offering support and money. props from some of the most ardent griz fans on this board--grizbacker1, true, betch--but nothing in the way of bucks, strategy or even a good lively sustained discussion. (in a phrase: "you go city!") and from the rest of the griz fans, including one who famously watches football games from his private box while dialing up important buddies from his ivy league days, not a peep. in a word: resignation.

i exchanged e-mails with a business bud from delaware, a guy who played in their football program and is probably in a position to help them financially, and he said summarily: "forget it. there's nothing you can do about it. when the big schools come calling, you can't beat the bucks, or the ambition and challenge that beats in the heart of a coach. we lost bray to notre dame. so be it, pal. we're a stepping-stone school. don't waste your time."

so be it? whadyall think.

Stock tip:

Invest in whatever bottled water company it is that coach K drinks during the games. You'll be rich before you know it.

City, I think your Delaware buddy hit the nail on the head. The only way Krysko stays at UM is if he decides to do a Robin Selvig, and just ignore the big school offers. There is virtually nothing we can do to stop them or to compete with them -- there simply ain't a million dollars out there, just waiting to be paid to a Montana coach every year. Besides, the fans/regents/president/whoever would NEVER go along with paying one head coach an amount like that, and not having other major head coaches anyway in the same ball park salarywise.
Just my thoughts on the issue....

link to story on pepperdine job. no mention of krysko. add marty wilson asst at utah to the list of serious contenders.

I posted the following earlier on another thread. It's an interesting idea, though it would take folks with some specific knowledge of this sort of thing to pull it off:

The Wall Street Journal recently had an interesting article regarding college athletic departments and finances. The article said that financially savvy alumni from a few colleges are creating venture-capital funds, the earnings from those funds go to their designated athletic programs. The money is used for such things as coaching salaries, improving weight rooms, etc.

The article focused on how Duke alumni are now creating such a fund to support the basketball program. About 20 venture capitalists are putting money into the fund, which will then invest in promising start up companies. Duke invests nothing. The venture capitalists don't earn a profit, but get tax deductions for their donations. The fund invests their money in companies in which the venture capitalists already have a stake and have investigated for potential.

Venture capital investing is riskier than your average type of investments, but there are big rewards for those who know what they are doing.

Duke's fund is still small, but Stanford was the first to start one about 20 years ago, and the fund now has $85 million.
