Krakauer

Why doesn't Krakhauer dig into why the President of the University and his cronies gave a Saudi student who had been involved in at least a couple sexual misconduct items a heads up that the University and the authorities were going to question him. Thereby tipping him off and letting him leave the country to go back home for "personal reasons?"

That’s a good question. How many of those involved still work at UM or in Montana higher education?

I get the impression JK has commissioner Christian in his crosshairs.

What are the circumstances with the Saudi student? I’ve heard it referenced over the years but never heard the details.

This case has troubled me over the years, though I don't know all the details. I haven't read Krakauer's book, but I guess he talks about it, and he basically gives UM administrators a pass on their actions, saying the laws were so ambiguous that it was understandable that they didn't notify the police right away. (Sounds like a bit of a double standard there, but again, I haven't read the book)

Anyway, I was interested to read in the Bozeman Chronicle recently that MSU had a case that was much like UM's. A Saudi student was accused of raping a fellow student (and roommate) last summer, and he fled the country when the police said they wanted him to come in for an interview.

My opinion:
This is a lot of hoops to go through to find out that the kangaroo court made many errors in the case which originally convicted JJ, then the appeal was denied via rubber stamp by the President, and subsequently the Commissioner reversed the decision after seeing how JJ was denied due process and also discovering that the Court responsible for JJ's trial was led by the Dean of Students who befriended the alleged victim and promised her justice. There is no conspiracy as Krakauer believers, rather this is a correction of an injustice against an accused UM student. When this all comes out, I believe that the former Dean of Students and former President will have the black eyes.

This assumes he actually cares about the truth rather than pushing his narrative and selling a book to the ”toxic masculinity” crowd.

I just deleted a post because I think I am playing into one of my own criticisms. Yes, I think Krakauer exploited the ugliness that happened for personal/professional gains. However, I hope that the injustice victims of rape experienced at the University of Montana has been addressed, and support has grown exponentially. This is where I choose to focus my efforts.

I'll have my cake and eat it too...

Krak is an assh@le.

Zero rapes at the University of Montana is the standard.

I don't understand why you're all so hung up on these sex assault issues.

I'm just here to talk about football. :coffee:

Dude, I'm not sure you are aware or not but you put yourself in peril on E-griz, possibly to the point of being band, if you don't spend 99% of your life living in the past.

In essence I suppose. My original post was about 90% of just why I feel like Krakauer is an asshole, and 10% I hope they hold the University to a higher standard. What exactly does that accomplish?

As an alumnus, I don't want a quick fix to our woes. I'm not going to say the ship is sailing if and when we are 16,000 strong again because to be honest the ship wasn't sailing when we had those numbers. I was there at 16,000 strong, and I can't honestly say the University of Montana was prepared to provide the education that many students, particularly those admitted with sub-standard college ability, required. I know it looks bad now, but I look at it like any agency that has gone through tough times: Apple, Ford, Disney. Call me Pollyanna, but I am hopeful through this we will see the University far surpass anything that occurred when I was there. This will not happen with threats of, "Montana Justice," on just one of the world's many assholes. It will occur from us dissecting everything we can do better. Shit....Pollyanna

Sort of a bad time to start dismissing a true fan. Griznation is a little meek these days.

Did everyone posting here actually read the book? Just curious what the knock on it was, other then it painted a pretty unflattering picture of Griz nation. Was it factually inaccurate? Thanks

Here’s the review of the book from The NY Times. Seems odd to me that you could write a book about something and not talk to the major characters noted in it.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/books/review/jon-krakauers-missoula-about-rape-in-a-college-town.html

This was a poorly researched & documented effort, full of “bromides” according to someone with no dog in the fight.
