Krakauer getting defensive?

Florio and Kidston are permitted to write virtual editorials masquerading as "news," dissenting voices are ruthlessly suppressed, and the Journalism Dean bequeaths knighthoods to those who are most effective at promoting "the narrative and the meme."

I never really understood why there is such a thing as "journalism school." Isn't news reporting like most other unskilled trades that one learns by doing? Just pick up a few legal rules-of-thumb, know your i-before-e's and you get your reporter's license, right?

Well, stupid me: Apparently journalism is much more like occupations that require demonstrable expertise like, you know, law, engineering, medicine and such. You can't just be hiring hacks off the street! They need to have some proxy for intelligence and professionalism in this accelerating meritocracy. So you make up an official collegiate area of study called Journalism. And as with most areas of academia, there must be a specialized language that allows a graduate to communicate with his colleagues, and really, for the sake of synergy, shouldn't that language suit the wannabe pols and MBAs who sit in the big corner offices?

Yes indeed!

And thus the modern J-school was born where they teach the language of bereavement, oppression and victimhood versus Power™ and around this mold all licensed journalists must sculpt the narrative.

Protect it at all costs, and you may someday have a nice pension with Lee Enterprises!

As a person who's married to a UM J-School graduate, I can assure you that there was a time where journalists actually had ethics and were taught ethical journalism methodologies. The advent of the internet, bloggers, TMZ, The National Enquirer, etc., has pretty much killed real journalists/journalism.

Hey '75, are you serious about there being video evidence? And if so, who all saw it and why was it not mentioned (as far as I can recall) in any of the numerous articles on the incident?

Probably because all of the articles have been written based on what the accuser has said and perhaps on transcripts/audio of the UM proceeding (if Krakauer has obtained it/them in this matter)--not on what the accused, their lawyers (some got lawyers, some didn't) or police/ county attorney have said. The accuser, Florio/Missoulan and Krakauer aren't presenting evidence and facts that support the conclusion of the county attorney not to pursue the case. Pabst seems to have been careful not to discuss evidence, except perhaps to the extent that Krakauer already disclosed. The video evidence was mentioned in a jezebel.com article 3 years ago (see below quote), and in various places on the internet. I don't know whether the video exists or not.

"She [a woman the author met in Missouala] tells it like this: two best girlfriends got drunk with the team and took turns going around in a circle and giving the players blowjobs. One of the girls also had sex with one of the football players that night, and when her boyfriend caught wind of the affair, she said it was non-consensual. He convinced her to file a police report, but the County Attorney's Office decided not to prosecute, citing a lack of evidence. Tori thinks that's because her friend showed them the video, which depicted the girl excited and laughing. "In other words," Tori says, "She was into it." The girl went to the college administration next, and thanks to the OCR's recently enacted "Dear Colleague" letter, which lowers the standard of proof on campus for sex charges within the rubric of Title IX, got him kicked off the team and possibly expelled."

You have! You have read' the Krak's' book. Very descriptive of his writing. Hope you waited til the price dropped to $14.

first of all, you should have the quote thing figured out by now. second, i'd be much more inclined to buy a book by um75 than to purchase 'missoula, blah blah blah'.

Am I missing something, isn't this the "smoking gun".

UM: Projected budget shortfall is $5.7 million
http://missoulian.com/news/local/um-projected-budget-shortfall-is-million/article_95d27d06-22bd-541f-91e0-b5070c3e6d11.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any concerned UM alumnus or supporter has to wonder if those smug, self-righteous people attending the forum -- a clear triumvirate of the J-School, Krakauer, and supporters of the "Narrative" -- can ever admit to the downside of what now appears to be their ongoing campaign to "get the White Quarterback."

Krakauer, now apparently emboldened by his reception, says he will write yet another book if he can win his "records" case. Clearly, based on his comments at the "forum," which was simply a potemkin forum -- there was no intention to "confront his critics" -- carefully controlled by the UM J-School Dean, determined to offer Krakauer a sympathetic and safe presentation to promote his book and make money at UM's expense, he appears now to be far more interested in "getting" JJ. Florio applauded. The J-School Dean nodded sagely and appreciatively. A small group of Missoulians appear entirely in favor of the malicious enterprise.

These people would rather take down UM, than to acknowledge that this has evolved far beyond a typical case of a fabulist trying to frame a popular quarterback and failing miserably to do so. This is becoming ground zero for the social justice warriors to undo the damage they did to themselves in the Rolling Stone debacle.

And UM doesn't get it. The d*** Dean sits there giving officious sanction to Krakauer; lending UM's credibility to the many outrageous claims. And, according to the Missoulian article, they really don't get it.

UM is going to be short yet another $6 million. The total damage from this debacle now totals approximately $25 million -- the cost of Engstrom's fecklessness, Gwen Florio's narrative journalism, and now, Krakauer's exploitation of the entire debacle, to the cheers of the crowd.

Read what these giant brains actually say about this year's deficit:
In the end, our revenue projections really came in where we wanted them to be," Reid said.

A drop in enrollment and rise in costs put UM in financial straits in planning for the 2016 fiscal year.

This year, the general fund was some $156 million, and UM was projecting its shortfall for the coming year would be anywhere from $2.2 million to $10 million, depending on how many new proposals were funded.
"Our revenue projections really came in where we wanted them to be."

And many of the same people affected by these cuts are out there celebrating Krakauer because the "Narrative" is now far more important than the education mission of the University of Montana. And UM has a dolt claiming that losses are "really" what we want? How much does that guy get paid? Is anyone home?

That Krakauer is part of the intentional process -- now a veritable announced campaign to "get JJ" -- that is driving these deficits?

And that we don't need UM Deans waiving their magic wands and approving of Krakauer and what is continuing to severely damage the University of Montana?

A female friend of mine did attend the Krakauer gathering and mentioned she was ashamed of the crowd and in fact the entire debacle.

She went on to give me solace by saying "Umista, most of the females attending were tending toward ugly...I doubt if they need fear of becoming a rape victim"

Today we note the extreme financial loss to the University.....due to the drop of students attending the U. And the Royce tune keeps playing "Florio" over and over while the Regents sing along.

Regents, get another tune to play or watch us become the laughing stock of Montana!

Which doesn't have a thing to do with being raped. That's a fairly ignorant comment your friend shared/had.

Not sure about this.

I bet Doubleday asked UM for their endorsement of the event and the admins saw two options.
...
Whatever personal feelings your admins had about the book I think they were professional enough to see it this way and choose b.
It is a generous assessment that supposes they did this consciously, and not simply following the same blind PC agenda that got this University Administration into a downward spiral in the first place.

The actual record of their judgment calls over the past four years suggests it is an optimistic view.

The first stone was cast by Royce Engstrom.

He did not seem much concerned with Biblical niceties.
