I never really understood why there is such a thing as "journalism school." Isn't news reporting like most other unskilled trades that one learns by doing? Just pick up a few legal rules-of-thumb, know your i-before-e's and you get your reporter's license, right?
Well, stupid me: Apparently journalism is much more like occupations that require demonstrable expertise like, you know, law, engineering, medicine and such. You can't just be hiring hacks off the street! They need to have some proxy for intelligence and professionalism in this accelerating meritocracy. So you make up an official collegiate area of study called Journalism. And as with most areas of academia, there must be a specialized language that allows a graduate to communicate with his colleagues, and really, for the sake of synergy, shouldn't that language suit the wannabe pols and MBAs who sit in the big corner offices?
Yes indeed!
And thus the modern J-school was born where they teach the language of bereavement, oppression and victimhood versus Power™ and around this mold all licensed journalists must sculpt the narrative.
Protect it at all costs, and you may someday have a nice pension with Lee Enterprises!

Probably because all of the articles have been written based on what the accuser has said and perhaps on transcripts/audio of the UM proceeding (if Krakauer has obtained it/them in this matter)--not on what the accused, their lawyers (some got lawyers, some didn't) or police/ county attorney have said. The accuser, Florio/Missoulan and Krakauer aren't presenting evidence and facts that support the conclusion of the county attorney not to pursue the case. Pabst seems to have been careful not to discuss evidence, except perhaps to the extent that Krakauer already disclosed. The video evidence was mentioned in a jezebel.com article 3 years ago (see below quote), and in various places on the internet. I don't know whether the video exists or not.
"She [a woman the author met in Missouala] tells it like this: two best girlfriends got drunk with the team and took turns going around in a circle and giving the players blowjobs. One of the girls also had sex with one of the football players that night, and when her boyfriend caught wind of the affair, she said it was non-consensual. He convinced her to file a police report, but the County Attorney's Office decided not to prosecute, citing a lack of evidence. Tori thinks that's because her friend showed them the video, which depicted the girl excited and laughing. "In other words," Tori says, "She was into it." The girl went to the college administration next, and thanks to the OCR's recently enacted "Dear Colleague" letter, which lowers the standard of proof on campus for sex charges within the rubric of Title IX, got him kicked off the team and possibly expelled."

A drop in enrollment and rise in costs put UM in financial straits in planning for the 2016 fiscal year.
This year, the general fund was some $156 million, and UM was projecting its shortfall for the coming year would be anywhere from $2.2 million to $10 million, depending on how many new proposals were funded.

It is a generous assessment that supposes they did this consciously, and not simply following the same blind PC agenda that got this University Administration into a downward spiral in the first place.super_eagle13 said:Not sure about this.UMGriz75 said:The d*** Dean sits there giving officious sanction to Krakauer; lending UM's credibility to the many outrageous claims. I bet Doubleday asked UM for their endorsement of the event and the admins saw two options.

Whatever personal feelings your admins had about the book I think they were professional enough to see it this way and choose b.
