Know your opponent: Should the Badgers worry about the Montana Grizzlies?
During Bo Ryan’s 11 years at Wisconsin, the team making the NCAA tournament has become a guarantee. It’s taking his teams past the Sweet 16 where Ryan has fallen short. This year’s Badgers team appears no different; a strong regular season squad with streaky shooters and an elite defense that could beat or lose to any team on any given night. Their upcoming matchup with the University Of Montana Grizzlies (1:10 p.m., TNT) should be a cakewalk, but if the Badgers shoot like they proved capable in their first loss to Iowa, then anything is possible.
Things that could make Bo Ryan mad: The Grizzlies enter the tournament having won 20 of their last 21 games against the weak Big Sky conference. Their Junior backcourt (Kareem Jamar and Big Sky defensive player of the year Will Cherry) has the ability to take over a game, and both players will be a challenge for Jordan Taylor to guard. The Grizzlies are also one of the nation’s top defensive teams, but they have not played a team nearly as talented as Wisconsin. If the Badgers can control Montana’s backcourt, then there isn’t much else to worry about in the matchup. The Grizzlies lack the size to dominate the paint like many teams can against the Badgers, and they have never faced a team that can slow the game down like Wisconsin.
Things that could make Bo Ryan not mad: The Badgers are the clearly superior team, and the Grizzlies have little experience facing quality opponents, with their toughest challenge coming in November during their win at home against Long Beach State. Their single game against a power conference team came in December against the Pac12’s Oregon State, when the Grizzlies shot 31 percent and lost by 25. There is nothing about the team that says it should be able to compete with the far more talented Badgers. Also, the Grizzlies’ head coach is named Wayne Tinkle.
What to make fun of them for: As already mentioned, the Grizzlies’ head coach is named Wayne Tinkle. Mr. Tinkle. Coach Tinkle. Or just simply Tinkle. Their whole team also lives in Montana; there’s no way that isn’t terrible.
Prediction: If the Badgers are able to shoot above 40 percent (big if), then they shouldn’t have any trouble beating the Grizzlies, who have never faced a defense as tenacious and well-coached as Wisconsin’s.
