keys to lady griz upset

1. attitude. play to win! last year's vandy experience combined with early-season games v. maryland, south dakota state and gonzaga should help. but--leave that deer in the headlights back on five south.
2. tam guardipee. against the smaller portland state vikings she was no factor, but against the tall timber from pitt, she's needed and could provide us a huge boost. back in the early 90's, when shannon cate was a senior, we played at u.s.c. against lisa leslie and company, and almost pulled off the upset. cate was great but a key that game was jodi heinrichs, who did an outstanding defensive job on leslie. we need tam similarly to rough up those pitt beanpoles.
3. "on fire!" yup, that's what we have to hear one of the announcers say about one of our players, maybe mandy, maybe sarah, maybe sonya. what kept us in the game against u.c.l.a. in 1975 (which my grandfather still feels was the best game ever played on a national stage by a montana team) was eric hays. that game, eric hays was "on fire!"
4. a key contribution or two from the bench (other than tam.) maybe that's stender or linford. maybe this is the coming out party for tianna ware, who provides the spark and quickness that's been so noticably lacking for our ladies at previous dances. but we need all the troops to contribute.
5. finally, we cannot have one of those cold spells that seem to blow in and freeze up the lady griz every now and then. we've got to make shots. all game.

is it possible? my head says no; heart, yes. here's hoping we play with heart.

Nice post. I would add Brit Lohman....she needs to pull their bigs out of the paint and hit some shots so Mandy or Sonya can drive to the basket. I would also like to see them believe they can win. Those early 90's teams (Cate, McNulty, Pilcher, Lake, Koss, et al) thought they could beat anybody and faired a lot better than recent teams in the tourney.

Do not be suprised if bring we use our posts on the perimeter or high post, and post up Mandy on their guards when they are in man.

Also, City, I agree with you on your points. But are you sure Cate played against Leslie? I thought Leslie played quite a bit later. I do recall the Lady GRIZ matching up with Cheryl Miller's USC team in the NCAA's though. Was that before Cate? (All the years are starting to run together now.)

i think i'm right on this one, mtgrizrule. cheryl miller came well before lisa leslie, who was born in 1972. that would place leslie at u.s.c. in 1992, the year we played them down there after we beat wisconsin in madison. miller has not played for some time; leslie retires after this season.

some game. it was nip and tuck late when shannon's shoulder popped out for the umpteenth time that season, and she had to go back to the locker room. by the time she came back, u.s.c. had put the game away. all the male cheerleaders from u.s.c. were smitten with shannon, i can tell you that.

Citygriz remembers the right year... 92, when LG w/Cate went into Madison and surprised the Badgers, 85-74. Final at USC was 59-71 and didn't reflect what the game was before Shannon got hurt.

In '95 went down to San Diego for the four-team thing and beat San Diego State 57-46 in first game, then lost to Purdue 51-62.

The '95 season was notable for having Vandy in Missoula (65-69 loss) as well as Tennessee (61-66 when Carla Beatty tore her achilles tendon). That was Tennessee honoring a deal with Robin for LG going to Tennessee to lose '94 opener 66-82. The '95 team was 26-7 with losses to Vandy, Duke,Tennessee, Utah, Purdue, at Boise State (61-64) and at EWash (59-62).

After that came losses in '96 to NC State down south 68-77, and at home, I think, in '97 to Tx Tech and maybe Cheryl Swopes, 45-47, which then beat Stanford to go on.

I remember that Lady Griz loss to USC. the Lady Griz were ahead or tied, shannon Cate drives to the hoop and gets fouled hard. shoulder pops out and she has to go and get it put back in. Meanwhile, Ann Lake comes in to shoot the freethrows. Ann was one of the worst freethrow shooters in Lady Griz history. She missed them both. Momentum changed. later, Lisa Leslie hit this three pointer, taking advantage of a mismatch where Julie Epperly was guarding her. That pretty much gave USC full control of the game and the Lady Griz lost.

Anyway, maybe this will be a game where Shadra Robisan shines. at 6 - 3 she has the most height of the Lady Griz. I expect Robin to test her out this game. I do not expect Robin to go with a player that has never been tested much such as Tiana Ware. If you want to watch Tiana Ware play, wait until next year.
She may get some time in this game, but it will likely be when game is already won or lost.

Key is for Sonya to nail her threes, Mandy to post up, and Britney to not go 1 - 11 like last week. Lauren Beck will need to have a big game. I expect Pitt to key on Mandy, Sonya, and Sarah. Pitt has the athleticism to defend those three. thus, it may be Britney and Lauren who really need to step it up.

Agreed, add in for Sarah Ena to get some rebounds on offense, and create a few plays (or draw a few fouls) with how gritty and tough she plays.

In addition to Lohman not going 1-11, she also cannot get into early foul trouble.

I really don't see Mandy posting up much. She will probably be guarded by a girl that is 6'1''. 4 inches is a lot for a girl to make something happen. The key to winning this game is to make shot after shot after shot. Sonya has to be the girl "ON FIRE"!

I hate to be the debby-downer here as I love the Lady Griz as much as anyone, but am I really the only one that thinks they will be lucky to stay within 15-20 points? Don't get me wrong, I will be cheering for them with all my heart, but I just don't see them beating Pitt. Sorry. I hope I'm wrong.
