Kenny Van Ackeren vs NDSU

In my post game recap I made a very big omission and that was the influence of Kendrick Van Ackeren in the NDSU game. Kenny’s stat line of 10 tackles was best on the team and he had 2 key fumble recoveries, a ½ tackle for a loss, and a QB hit.

Looking back over the play by play he had multiple stops on 2nd and 3rd down to slow down NDSU drives and he was the guy that made the last stop in the game on the bobbled kickoff - finishing off NDSU for good.

His awareness on the field and ability to be in the right place at the right time was clutch in that game. Both of his fumble recoveries lead to points for Montana, two fieldgoals. One could argue his recovery of the 2nd half fumble was the tipping point in that game. The crowd was starting to fade out of the game and people were staring to accept what they thought was the inevitable.

There were A LOT of pro scouts there watching the game on the sidelines and my feeling is that Kendrick was one of our seniors who did a lot to make an impression in that game!

Lead the team in tackles last year and doing the same so far. He just seems to always be around the ball. He will be ALL-AMERICAN.

Definitely agree! And it was a blue collar kind of performance. No showboating or extracurricular activities. Just line up and do it again. I can think no better role model for our D. For the most part they all played that way. Good, clean, tough football. Very satisfying to watch and certainly different than years past.

If you watch him too he seems to be a good motivator of other guys on the defense. He's always giving encouragement and has a very laid back / no stress attitude. Watching the replay of the NDSU game when a defender would get beat you'd notice Kenny was usually the first guy there to pat him on the helmet and talk to him.

From practices I can tell you KVA seems like a guy that likes to keep it light and fun. His attitude seems to help keep his teammates cool as well.

Fast Forward to about the 5m 15sec mark of this UM/NDSU vid!
KVA rushes in............. Says a LOT!

If KVA can play the whole game this year, CPSLO will not have their way with our D like they did after he went down last year. Revenge game for the defense; they were embarrassed last year at SLO.

In addition to all the positive comments it's great seeing Simms caring "the stick"...not sure what the boys call it and Mick hugging all the kids and coaches. I may catch crap for this but Mick is class and the Griz faithful owe him our gratitude. I have nothing to base my next comment on but I don't think Stitt would have given the Griz a look four years ago. As several have stated Mick got us on firm ground.

I forgot about that! Weren't we managing Poly ok until Kendrick went down?

KVA definitely understood how to defend against the triple option and the defense surely missed him last year after his injury!

At Bellevue, KVA played quarterback. He learned the art of effective leadership within chaos. :thumb: A great leader knows how to motivate people ... especially teammates.
