Kareem Jamar: the greatest

What kind of person and player has Kareem Jamar been during his stellar career at Montana?
The following quote, from Dave Guffey's March 2nd profile on the senior, says it all:

“I play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back,” Jamar said when asked how he wanted to be remembered by Griz nation.

“I take real pride on that name on the back, but I make sure that every time that I step out there that I am playing for Montana. I play for the blue collar people out there – the tough people. I play for the die-hard fans – the fans who have been watching me play since I was a freshman.

A career top 10 Griz statistically (in several categories) and in the career top 20 as a Big Sky great -- and a two-time Big Sky MVP -- Kareem has led the Griz to post-season play three times in three years.

In my book, that makes him one of the top 5 Griz to ever play at UM.

Congratulations, Kareem! Thanks for coming to Montana.

Good luck over the remainder of your outstanding Montana and Big Sky Conf. career.

Have they announced the MVP this year? Or were you referring to tournament MVP? Just wanted a little clarification!

And tonight, when he was not having his best game and MSU was hounding him with a box and 1 defense and physical play--and when the game was on the line and the Griz desperately needed a bucket to keep their slim lead--Kareem hit 2 buckets (for 4 of his 8 points). He's a big time player. I have loved watching him (and Cherry) the past 4 years--and can't imagine not seeing Kareem on the court.

Apologies for lack of clarity: I meant the tourney MVP in 2012 and Big Sky Conference (and tourney) mvp in 2013.

Regardless, he's still among the best. And, as PlayerRep described of his play last night... the kind of player who usually rises up (in tough circumstances) when he's needed most.

With the lead down to 2, Kareem hit a bucket. MSU answered, and the lead went back down to 2. Kareem immediately answered with another 2 (layup). These were the only times the Cats got within 2 in the second half. Then, Kareem drove and dished to Weisner, who hit the big 3. Those were the last 3 buckets of the game. Prior to Kareem's 2 big buckets, he had a steal. Gregory missed an open look 3 from in front of the bench. The Cats got 1 of 2 free throws to get within 2.

It will be interesting to see which players pick up their overall games next season. Kareem brings more versatility than any GRIZ I remember. I am sure Jordan Gregory will bust ass in the off season to bring more to his game. What we miss most with Kareem's departure will be his ability to create for teammates and do whatever the team needs when asked for.

Kareem gets so much credit for his offense, and rightfully so. Defensively, he is very seldom out of position. Granted, he is not a shutdown defender, but he is better than most will give him credit for.

I have a feeling we will see Jamar bring as much intensity and focus as ever in the Big Sky Conference Tournament this year. I'd love to see him get to the NCAA's one more time. Can he do an Anthony Johnson like performance? I feel he is capable of it. If he does get his team back to the NCAA's, I will most surely put him in the talk of all time great GRIZ players, along with MRR and LK. Come to think of of it, he already belongs to be mentioned with them.

Great career, Kareem. I hope we have another Kareem in the wings like we had another Cherry waiting (Dunn). Thanks for excellent years on and off the court Kareem. You'll be missed.

I was wondering the same thing. I thought he only won it last year. Although according to the Big Sky's messed-up website, they mistakenly have Davion Berry winning MVP last year.
