Kareem Jamar commits to the Griz

Class, I think you just have to accept Montana basketball for what it is...a mid-major playing in an average conference. UM will not recruit the same guys as any of the Pac 10 schools, and maybe not even the MWC. They will recruit against WAC and WCC level teams for that level of talent. Even if the Griz hit on a kid early that looks like he has tons of potential, if he shows anything before signing day, a bigger school will usually swoop in and grab him.

Seriously...why not offer 4 and 5 star recruits? Is there a limit to how many offers can be extended?

I guarentee you Montana has offered 3, 4 and 5 star recruits here are a few names.

Josh Huestis - Stanford (signee)
Will Cherry - Montana
Derek Selvig - Monntana
Mike Brueseitz - Wiscconsin
Jared Berggren - Wisconsin
Will Bogan Misssissippi
Garrett Sim - Oregon
Drew Wiley - Oregon
E.J. Singler Oregon
Mike Moser - UCLA
Reggie Moore - Washington State
Austin Dufault -Colorado
Michael Harthun - Washington State

The real question is not, why not offer these prospects, but is how much of your $30,000-40,000 dollar recruiting budget do you spend to recruit them. Remember it cost up to up to $3,000 -$4,000 to bring a kid on to campus, not to mention scouting and home visits.

The NCAA does not limit the number of offers you can tender, but they do limit the number of kids you can bring on campus to about 15 (I may be one or two off on that number high or low), and when you have 4-5 scholarships to fill a year you have to be a little judicious with who you to invite to campus. That said I know coaches like to take 1-2 chances every year with an upper level prospect, but that is always a big crap shoot and the odds are not always in the schools favor.

There are NO ugly chicks allowed on my yacht. 8-)

OK, thanks for the info mslacat. So it sounds like we are being more aggressive than I originally perceived. I probably should have done a little more research - and I can understand your point about being hamstrung by recruiting budget and trying to maximize the dollars that are there. Would you then characterize our recruiting - in terms of the ratings of the players we are getting now - as improved, worsened or about the same as, say, 5 years ago? Can you envision a scenario, maybe 3-5 years down the road, where we maybe land a four star guy (perhaps if the player was from the PacNW)?

Tht might not be as true now as it once was....the quality of life is an issue and in some urban areas, Montana looks pretty good....Gonzaga has shown what happens when fans and coaches and alumni expect more than the usual....UM got Cherry, a true bona fide West Oakland urban guy....he is getting better every game....like the cliche says...build it they will come..

Not in the Big Sky Conference...

Stuckey. Although he backed in because of grades others could as well. Did they have the grading system when M. R. Richardson played?

Stuckey was a rivals 3 star along with Cherry, Selvig, Cam Rundles, and Jack McGillis.

espn just updated their rating of Jamar and gave him a 91, and say he is the 32 best small forward in the country. So If you trust espn's ratings it would appear that the Griz are doing a good job of securing upper level talent. Below is the link to the big sky conf's recruitng page on espn's site. You have to be a espn insider to read player evaluations though.

Jud Heathcote was recruiting a black player because there had been no black players on the team the prior year. We was tired to some bigots thinking that he didn't want any blacks on the team. He tried and tried to recruit a black player and was unsuccessful until he found this kid who was the 5th kid on his Denver Manuel high school team to get a scholarship. Jud didn't think he would develop as a player but wasn't going to finish up his recruiting class with no black players. No, Michael Ray was not a highly recruited player out of high school. (I might have the wrong name on the HS, but that is the way Jud talked about it at the time.)

In the latest Los Angeles Times poll Jamar's WESTCHESTER High School (6-0) was rated #1 The Times' top 25 boys' basketball rankings. Vaughn Autry's GARDENA SERRA high school (7-1) is #6 while Montana States signee Casey Trujeque's PRICE (10-0) high school is rated #11

I have more updates on the Griz and Bobcat signees on my Blog

That $3000-$4000 figure is puzzling? Round trip air $500-$600, Hotel $100 a night for 3 nights, meals $100 a day. A three day/three night trip shouldn't cost more than $1200 unless Tinkle is handing the kid $2000-$3000 for spending money.

Thanks Coach Tinkle for getting AJ here. Just unreal what transpired last night.

I'm sure the link has been posted, but here it is again:

True, Jamar just verballed but I have to think that watching the team you verballed to get a lot of press for a big win on ESPN helps. You have his friends watching the game and saying, "hey, didn't you committ to Montana?" Helps to solidify his choice. Now if the Griz can get a first round win.....
