Kaimin Story - Harris Family Feels UM Dropped the Ball

Don't know if you young pups know, but the dad, Greg Harris, was one of the toughest and best Griz players of his era.

Yes, a very sad story. I don't understand suicide, but know there is a lot in MT and I have been way to close to it too many times. I read a suicide note a couple years ago of someone who knew very well. It said something like this. "Dear family and friends. I am so sorry to do this to you, but my disease is so bad that this is on the only answer." The note seemed so rationale. It was severe depression. This person had received significant treatment, including very recently.

Very sad. I cant imagine what that family is going through. When a kid is 18 the school can’t release any information to anyone without the students written permission. After 6 concussions you would think someone would have sat him down and say there is life after football and it is not worth it.

Weida said. “Now, not everyone wants to be cared for. So, if we feel like it is a necessity, we can say you can’t participate in practice or play until you take care of this thing.”

So if you're feeling lonely, depressed and isolated, we will isolate you further from the protective factors in your life by not allowing you to participate in activities. With a philosophy like that, I can see the father's concerns. You don't ass-kick your way out of depression.

I don't get the drama here Ursa. If a kid isn't getting treatment required to treat an ailment, what do you think should happen?

No drama—you don’t treat depression with turning your back on someone. It’s very simple.

having suffered through it a few times, most pretty bad, i totally agree with ursa. depressed people usually isolate themselves when they can, making the problem worse. i think trying to keep them involved in the endeavors in their life that provide structure and interactions with others is an important part of helping keep them afloat.

He quit taking his meds and quit going to counseling. Granted, he's an adult but his immediate family could have been advised-even under HIPAA. Why weren't they?

Last fall, a day after the Cat game, I sat at a table with Andrew at the Griz awards banquet. He seemed very morose, and kind of unfriendly, which I fully attributed to the game result the day before. The day he died was my first day on the Butte mental Health LAC for suicide prevention. Butte just had a teen suicide last week, making four or five, I think while my kids were in high school. I’ve been distressed by this and agree wholeheartedly with Ursa. It’s a sad deal.

Who are you suggesting should have told them?

I don’t think they can tell parents under hipaa, but it if the could it would have nice. You could change the combo on the gun safe. Might have made a difference. Or maybe not. Hard to say.

Whom? And if you are assuming UM, are you certain they were privy to that info?

Should have specified speaking for our situation and not the Harris. And specific to us, the Curry Health Center, and yes they has information I wish we had.

What I was getting at though was the athletic department would only know what the medical provider was able to let them know. They would not have direct access to the information, and probably have no knowledge about the failure of taking medication.

We are almost complete agreeing with each other, it just takes a lot of reading between the lines to see it.

God, it just makes your heart hurt. Saying it's a parent's worst nightmare doesn't even touch it. This is the shit that wakes you up at 3:30 am and keeps you up, especially as a parent of teenagers. You never know what's really happening in their world, no matter how hard you try.

From my familia to the Harris clan, may God grant you the strength. So sorry for your loss.

Do you wanna know? At 3:30. You have been awake for a couple hours. You take a sleep aid at 8:30 so you can sleep. But by 2:00 the dreams overwhelm you. Sometimes he tells you he’s sorry. Sometimes he tells you it’s your fault. Always you remember everything you did wrong and wish your could do it over, and you know you really had only one job and failed. You wonder if you will ever sleep through the night again. You are angry at everything and everyone. It someone’s fault but there has to be a way to make this right and hit reset. There was isn’t.

Grizbeer, so sorry man. No words...

Yea thanks, but not really looking for sympathy or what not. Just saying that this is a fucked up situation and asking real people for a rational quote or solution to an unreasonable reality. Is terrible. I don’t know the Harris kid or family. But my son was a Griz and fan, student and employee. And no one at UM (or the Missoulian) cared. And he’s isnt the first and won’t be the last Point is,it really sucks, but you shouldn’t burn the house down (unless they lose to the cats again)
