If he hadn't of taken the effort to get KAY game time the previous year while maintaining his redshirt, maybe, but it sure seems like KAY as the #1 was his plan.

Well, we all know Bobby's doghouse is a difficult thing to get out of. Multiple ways in, many times no way out. I think Fife found that out for some reason...the blowup on the sidelines was just the visible conclusion of that drama. Maybe Bobby initially brought Fife in for an honest competition, maybe not. Just seems weird that for two seasons in a row Bobby couldn't make a decision on a starting QB. Makes one wonder: was he trying to cram Vidlak into the role the previous year too? Up until the team literally quit on him mid-game? The drama continues...

Uhhhh…yeah….welcome to the party.

Let’s follow that line of thinking to its logical conclusion, shall we? If it’s true that “the other options on the roster were worse”, then that means KAY was truly better than Fife, an FBS upperclassman who most around here thought walked on water, which proves the whole basic premise of this thread—that KAY was better than most gave him credit for.

Many posters are so hung up on “Bobby’s plan” that they fail to realize KAY was pretty damn good for a freshman.

No it doesn't. All it proves was Bobby overestimated the talent of the OTHER guys around him. Being the cream of the crap doesn't make you a fucking world beater. And being better than the other QB's who happen to be on the roster (regardless of your class) doesn't make you the greatest freshman QB in Griz history. There are a number of examples of freshmen QB's who sat because the guy starting was better than the competition KAY had.

Hell, Jordy Johnson's freshman year he sat behind Justin Roper. Then his RS Freshman year he threw for 2400 yards and 21 TD's and rushed for over 500 yards as well. Whoops!! Suddenly, KAY has now dropped to the THIRD best RS Frosh QB we've had...The other QB's on that team were Trent McKinney, Gerald Kemp, some guy named Nate Montana, and Shay Smithwick-Haan. Two of those guys would have started over anybody we had on the squad this year. And that's with just 5 minutes of research.

Again, it's not rocket science.

I hope and pray that KAY turns into his father...or some reasonable facsimile thereof. He's shown flashes of it. He's also shown flashes of being Kris Brown. So, given his apparent competition or the starting role next year (as we know it now), we're likely going to find out finally whether Bobby really CAN develop a QB in the coming years.

Hate to be that guy, but Pflu decided to play JJ in a couple meaningless snaps during the 2010 season, meaning he retained his redshirt (which he then used during the 2012 season).

Sooooo, technically, 2011 was his Sophomore season, not his RS-Fr season.

It's incredible how players raise their game when they believe in the person playing QB. All of a sudden, receivers stopped dropping the ball, and the O-line blocked better. Oh, and Fife threw three TDs.

I pointed this out in the OP. My “research” showed JJ appeared in “6 games” his freshman year but had a great sophomore season

I so agree with this point. So many people/fans want to obsess over a bad play or half of football and use that for their argument as to why they are right and you are wrong.

That line of thinking doesn't fit in my life. I always took it one play at a time, when that play was over, immediately garner information, learn from it and reflect. Then quickly forget and move on to the next play.

I reflected on my play in 4 chunks during the season. How did I play overall over the last 3 games and how can I improve on that current data set. One play, one amazing set of stats, one half, one game doesn't make a player good or great. Its consistency over a long period of time that does that.

IMO it takes time to accurately judge talent not instant gratification.
