K. Ah Yat the greatest UM Quarterback

Many of you have been saying for several years that we can't develop a young QB that can start for several years, even if it means losing a few games in the beginning but as soon as we try this you all want to hang the coaches for not staying with the young guy and let him learn, make mistakes and improve as time goes on. You can't have it both ways. Look at the NFL you have many first years QB's that just struggle with the new systems and a few years in suddenly look all world.

This 100%. The only way to develop a QB is to play him in real games. And like all other humans, he will learn the most from the mistakes he makes. But only if he’s allowed to keep playing in real games when he makes those mistakes.

The best case scenario is that you have a great team to rise above and still win most games while he is developing. See NDSU.

Why recruit a better qb then if you aren’t planning to play him

Based on his body of work thus far, I'm not convinced that he is the answer. I'm not saying that he can't develop into something greater than he is now, but the reality he still has a long ways to go. And this coaching staff has not proven that they are capable of developing QBs. We should absolutely continue recruiting the position aggressively.

it could also be pointed out that jensen was the back-up, behind a much more talented and game-ready reese phillips. then savannah state happened (i think it was them), and like every year he was at um, stitt's team played a signficant number of games with a backup qb. but he ain't bobby hauck so he doesn't get a break for that issue. could you imagine the outrage if stitt handled the qb situation like bobby did this year?
I don’t think anyone would have been outraged if Stitt used a TE to help protect the QB in the passing game, as Hauck does. Reese Phillips (and others) were punished by an inadequate protection scheme, so a lot of the time there weren’t two QBs of similar talent levels to compete for playing time.

That being said, I believe one of Stitt’s teams lost to Weber State at home, too, which was quite disappointing.

The Griz QB's have been good or very good every year under this group of coaches, except a top ongoing starter never developed this year.

Why if AhYat is their qb of choice. There are other qbs in the qb room that can back up AhYat.

The Griz QBs have been some of the weakest in the Big Sky. Hard to believe that Sneed has been the only QB to be selected by the coaches to one of the three all-conference teams. Cliff was dominate in spite of clown show coaches.

23 years and counting. And his dad didn't win an NC either. Some of us don't have a lot of time left to wait.
There was a Black Light poster long ago showing two old weather worn Vultures perched on a dead tree limb in the desert. One says to the other, "Patience my ass, I'm gonna kill something."
Get a 'can do QB, NOW!!!'

I understand fans frustrations with the season. I understand Fife’s frustrations. But I can’t understand how people can’t see the talent in this kid. Our best LBs didn’t start for a few years, our best DBs didn’t start right away. O line, receivers etc.And QB is the toughest position to learn. Like I said before Fife, Clif, Humphrey, Sneed all sat and learned . Ah Yat was thrown to the fire. He played this year and had flashes of just amazing playmaking ability but then he would make freshman mistakes. He can correct all those. Watch Griz drive from inside the 5 vs SDSU up until he threw the pick inside the 20. Some great throws and runs and then a pick. That drive will be used to motivate and teach him.
Good kid, a jewel of a developer, just about everything you'd want. His refinements look promising, good winter, bright spring camp ahead!

Right on. It was a great catch.
All things considered, I personally think KAY is a better QB than GJ.
Thus, the takeaway is that for over 40 years (since Marty was a freshman), KAY is arguably the best freshman QB The Griz have ever had, particularly if you extrapolate the number of snaps compared to a pass-heavy offense, and include his rushing. Yet some fools on here (not you) want to shit all over KAY. That’s the whole reason for this thread—to point out that KAY could actually be better than some fans may believe, and maybe just maybe, BH/Pease see that.
In other words, if you twist and turn and alter the ACTUAL statistics to fit your narrative, magically your narrative comes true!

i know i'm gonna get stitt for this, but 'tis the truth :)
Facts are pesky things, aren't they?

I'm sorry, but you guys wanted Hauck drawn and quartered because his backup couldn't win games in 2022 against top 10 teams lol.

I'm not going to get into the Stitt argument again, but I always like pointing out that he's the only Griz coach to lose to a bobcat team with a losing record since 1985, and he did it two years in a row, knocking his team out of the playoffs each time.

What narrative? WTF are you talking about?
Sorry, but the stats are what the stats are. You want to extrapolate, and adjust for types of offenses, etc., etc to make a point he's "arguably" the best freshman QB we've ever had...He had 7 TD's and 6 INT's. He struggled to stay healthy. Jensen played in just 10 games his Freshman AA season. His stats blow KAY's out of the water.

CAN he develop? Sure.
WILL he develop? Bobby's track record says...mmmm, not so much.
