K. Ah Yat the greatest UM Quarterback

…in modern UM history as a freshman.

The only one close was Cole Bergquist.

Here is KAY’s stat line as a freshman:

CMP att yds cmp% avg Lng td int sack syl rtg

113 190 1,111 59.5 5.8 44 7 6 15 -106 114.4

Car rush avg Lng Tds
57 159 2.8 32 7

He also set a single-game record for a Montana quarterback with four rushing touchdowns in one game.

Cannot find any stats for Super Dave in 1992 as a freshman

KAY’s dad, Brian, took over in 1996 as a sophomore.

It appears only one freshman QB played between 1998 and 2010, Cole Bergquist in 2004, who obviously had a great year as a freshman but cannot find his stats. Can anybody help with those?

It appears Andrew Selle lettered as a freshman, but, again, I cannot find his stats.

Jordan Johnson in 2010 played in six games as a true freshman.

Did I miss any freshman QBs during this time frame?

Due to the differences in starts and playing time, the totals and averages don't really compare. But, yes Jensen had a pretty good year. I didn't run the percentages on interceptions per throws. Both had way too many.

This is an interesting thought and thread. Never thought of that. Puts everything in a different perspective. Thx.
It dawned on me towards the end of the season. We've never seen a frosh campaign like his. And really, he was out w injury on 3 separate occasions. Definitely a strong start to his career for him!

Uh, not trying to knock Keali'i, but Gresch Jensen was a R-Fr in 2017 and put up much better numbers.

Great catch. Jensen was a bit forgettable for me as I’ve tried to block that whole era from memory although he did have a good year in a pass-heavy offense.
KAY’s total career yards: 1,541 and 14 TDs.
So in a sense it looks like KAY is about two-thirds GJ’s stats but had almost half as many snaps.

I understand fans frustrations with the season. I understand Fife’s frustrations. But I can’t understand how people can’t see the talent in this kid. Our best LBs didn’t start for a few years, our best DBs didn’t start right away. O line, receivers etc.And QB is the toughest position to learn. Like I said before Fife, Clif, Humphrey, Sneed all sat and learned . Ah Yat was thrown to the fire. He played this year and had flashes of just amazing playmaking ability but then he would make freshman mistakes. He can correct all those. Watch Griz drive from inside the 5 vs SDSU up until he threw the pick inside the 20. Some great throws and runs and then a pick. That drive will be used to motivate and teach him.

He also couldn't score or lead a scoring drive against PSU for an entire half. Yes he had flashes of being good but he also had stretches of being downright bad, I hope he will improve but until then I'm content to remain skeptical as imo he hasn't proven he is "the guy" just yet. As mentioned however the coaching staff this year sure as hell didn’t do him or Fife any favors.

Where did he play later? Was he good at other schools and systems or just throwing bubble screens and fade balls with Bob Stitt?

Please let me know when the fun innovative offensive guy who’s a “players coach” wins anything.

lol some of you guys need to chill. I’ve been a bigger Ah Yat defender on here than almost anyone. I’m not suggesting Jensen was better than KAY ever will be, or defending Stitt and his offense.

But if someone is going to claim Ah Yat had the greatest statistical freshman season for a QB here ever, I don’t think it’s out of line to point out that objectively that isn’t true.

I was hoping you would post in this thread about your same ol’ nonsense and you did not disappoint. Only thing you forgot to mention was to wish for a switch to the Wingnut-T.

Right on. It was a great catch.
All things considered, I personally think KAY is a better QB than GJ.
Thus, the takeaway is that for over 40 years (since Marty was a freshman), KAY is arguably the best freshman QB The Griz have ever had, particularly if you extrapolate the number of snaps compared to a pass-heavy offense, and include his rushing. Yet some fools on here (not you) want to shit all over KAY. That’s the whole reason for this thread—to point out that KAY could actually be better than some fans may believe, and maybe just maybe, BH/Pease see that.

it could also be pointed out that jensen was the back-up, behind a much more talented and game-ready reese phillips. then savannah state happened (i think it was them), and like every year he was at um, stitt's team played a signficant number of games with a backup qb. but he ain't bobby hauck so he doesn't get a break for that issue. could you imagine the outrage if stitt handled the qb situation like bobby did this year?

i know i'm gonna get stitt for this, but 'tis the truth :)
