He's the best we've got at multiple positions even though we've not seen him even practice with the team, and we won't until August! Woo Hoo!

I hope, for his sake, he becomes the greatest player we've ever had. These things tend to take a bit of time. I'll hold my opinion until I see how he stacks up once he's been here for a bit.

My recollection is Mariani started showing well earlier in his sophomore year, and then got an injury or nagging injury that seemed to slow him. Based on your schollie info, he got a scholarship following redshirt sophomore year.

On a different subject, based on the huge talent that some posters know Calhoun has, there's already a developing concern that he will exercise the 5th year/already graduated option, to move up to the Pac-12 for his redshirt senior year. Hopefully, Ash will be able to be able to cut off that avenue with the ncaa rules before Calhoun moves up.

Like I correctly said, and the whole point is Mariani wasn't a stud WR when he arrived at UM (no scholarship and no greatness at WR) until his REDSHIRT-JR year (4 years into the program). People expect 1st year (true frosh) and 2nd year (true soph) players to be all-world, when that rarely, if ever, happens at UM. Like Brint said, these things take time...

Mariani's numbers benefited in his two big WR seasons (4th year in the program 2008, and 5th year in the program 2009) from the team going to back-to-back national championship games...which involved playing 16 and 15 games, respectively. The seasons since, the Griz WRs have had 11-14 game seasons.

His last two WR seasons in the program were epic, a major reason for the Griz success in 08-09.

Mariani is the perfect example of why I like to red-shirt all incoming players. If he hadn't redshirted his first year in the program, the Griz would have lost Mariani's most successful 5th WR year (for nothing in his 1st).

Red-shirting the in-coming players is the key to program success. :egriz:

I like what I see in both these young guys but you all do realize that comparing him to Mariani/Henderson that y'all are making the kid an all-time great who hasn't played a snap yet? I am excited about them but I aint stupid. Personally I think both these twins need some time in the weight room first. Although, that southern section of the CIF is a for real HS football league.

Alpha is onto something here with Justin Calhoun. The kid is a rare breed at this level. A natural cover corner who has Pac 12 level hips, feet and turn and run ability with nice ball skills. Needs some added strength to tackle, Gregorak will probably never ask him to jam though. Calhoun is explosive and can break on the ball in an instant. Gregorak is probably beating down Stitts door to have this kid play DB. I would love to see him redshirt but from a pure cover standpoint I think he is the best we have. Also like the returnability aspect that Alpha mentioned. Calhoun has a rare combination of quick burst and top end speed.

Interesting discussion about Calhoun from 2015. I've always looked at him as a DB and Stitt was hoarding all the athletes at WR (not breaking news there). VERY happy to see Justin at CB where he belongs playing extremely well. He will only get better.
I am also a big fan of Dareon Nash's potential as an ex WR turned CB.

You called it back then, StumptownGriz. No doubt (as good of a WR as he was) that he was in the wrong position. One game in and he looks like a natural. Imagine last year if we’d had Calhoun on one side and McKinley on the other with Sanders backing up....a lot of games may hav turned out differently....then again, if Semore was gonna blitz on 3rd and 30 maybe not....
