got to combine two pleasures this afternoon--seeing joslyn tinkle play for the first time, and revisiting one of my all-time fave sports venues, the pro-am basketball league at old kezar auditorium. they have a men's league and a women's league, and over the years i've seen several pros put on incredible shows, especially mitch richmond, tim hardaway and jason kidd. this was the first time i've been to a women's game, but it's a league where cal and stanford give their recruits a chance to test themselves against some very good competition, many pros.
and i can confirm what you already know--joslyn will excel at any level. at first i thought she was just a big 'ole lumbering country girl, but as the game wore on, she showed more and more talent--great quick post moves, a nice outside shot, some stellar defensive plays. among the other players on the floor were gennifer brandon, a 6'3" post player with a 92 rating who has signed with cal, and a joslyn clone, mikaela ruef, a 6'3" gal from ohio with a 96 rating and great athleticism. but finally, if you had to pick one of them, you'd take joslyn, hands down.
not that she doesn't have work to do. her defense, while spectacular at times, is not always sound, and i don't think at the college level she'll be able to dribble in the open court the way she probably did against montana kids. it'll take her time to adjust to quicker, stronger competition.
but she's a wonderful player, and by all outward appearances, a classy young lady. she and mikaela reuf seem already to have bonded, and i'd say her college career is off to a great start.
