Jonathan Smith

Haha...

I really like Bobby Hauck and I think he would be the better option over JS, but I swear some of you guys would take Bobby over ANYBODY.

If Bobby is the guy, I'll be happy. I think we'll get a better, more experienced version from his first stint here. However, I do hope we reach out to and interview some other candidates as well.

Lol...Everett, I’ve been saying this since the day Stitt was fired and BH was named the front runner. Times change, memories fade, apparently. First round playoff losses as the #1 seed, 0-3 in championship games, failure to make halftime adjustments, boring offense, etc., etc....were all complaints of Hauck-coached teams.

I’m not necessarily AGAINST hiring BH, but it is comical how he’s now gonna be the 2nd coming of Christ to many posters here...

Good god. Some of you amaze me. You'd take Hauck over Belichick

+1

It's amusing how so many Griz fans' perception of Hauck has changed over the years. I don't remember those years quite as rosey as most others.

Look at his record in his 7 years. That speaks for itself. House burglary was too bad. If some of you want to focus on bad press over Jimmy Wilson or some whining kid Kaimin reporter and 3 losses in national championship games, have at it. Hauck continued and built on a culture of winning and excellence, and that's what I liked about him. Plus, I liked him and his family personally.

I can't believe this is even a question. If anyone would rather have BH instead of Smith, they've clearly never played the game.
Let's see a candidate with 12 years head coaching experience at both DI levels, 7 enormously successful at this institution, a Montana native with relationships with coaches across the state, vs. a non-candidate who is a young successful offensive coordinator with zero head coaching experience. Who couldn't wait to get out of Montana after a year here. I can't believe this is even a question.

Hauck is a much better choice for UM head coach. Look at the posts regarding what people thought of Smith at UM.

PR, to be clear it is not ME that’s focusing on those things. I only point them out to point out the hypocrisy of some of the Griz fan base. Those are the things he regularly got flamesprayed for right here on eGriz as his tenure came to a close, yet now he’s the 2nd coming of Christ to many of the same people. PERSONALLY, I liked him as a coach then, thought he did a good/great job and had an enviable record, and wish that he’d never left because exactly what I feared would happen HAS happened. Now, at the same time I do NOT believe he’s going to be able to capture that magic again, certainly not to the level he did before. I would LOVE to be wrong about this, and will gladly come back and eat a gigantic plate of crow if I am...I just don’t think it’s realistic...but to read some of those championing his return you’d think they expect him to get us to the semis (at a minimum) NEXT year...

I pretty much agree. If Hauck had been hired 3 years ago, UM would be closer to the top now. I have also said several times, that I'm not sure that it will be possible to even come close to repeating what Hauck did last time. However, I believe he would have made the playoffs the last 3 years. He wouldn't have been wasting his time with a scheme and culture makeover, and completely turning over the roster.

True. Certainly his offensive philosophy aligned much more with the types of recruits Delaney had brought in...

I’m not necessarily AGAINST hiring BH, but it is comical how he’s now gonna be the 2nd coming of Christ to many posters here...

What I remember about BH is that he is a conservative coach. His defenses will not be so aggressive as to make dumb calls like we saw vs. MSU. His offenses will be balanced and depend on being able to run the ball and wear down defenses late in games. His teams are prepared and no one will have better ST performance. His teams always improved as the season progressed, no regression like we saw in '16.

He will tend to sit on leads and "play to not lose." That cost him in his '03 NDSU game and the '09 NC game. That part drove me nuts; I hope it is among the many things he has learned since leaving UM. Don Read once said that he learned far more from his failures (referring to his stint at Oregon) than he ever learned from his successes. It is going to be great to see BH 2018 version.

“Sitting on leads” and “playing not to lose” are euphemisms for “lack of halftime adjustments”.

I, too, hope he learned something in his time away.

I hope he's learned. If not, it's pavement. I don't know if I've said this before, but I'm not going to tolerate excuses and mediocrity anymore.

Nope. They're what many coaches use to win games. Look at the 2 or so years where the Griz gave up almost no points in the 3d quarter. Indication of good adjustments.

People complaining about BH not winning titles amaze me....Stitt got playoffs once with Delaney talent at WR then nothing next two year's and lost to sub. 500 cat teams twice with playoffs in stake.

Exactly. We're not about that life anymore. If that happens in the next two years, we will have to question the leadership in the department for sure.
