Joining the Mountain West would run an $8MM - $9MM annual deficit - can we overcome that?

You'd lose that bet. The whole state would be at their bowl game. And clean out the concessions.

Considering there are 6 bars in AZ that are official NDSU watch parties for every game, quite a bit of ND’s population is already in AZ in December regardless of NDSU making a bowl there or not.

SDSU AD says there prepared to move up to FBS if the invite came. Another AD in the FCS publicly saying there ready.
He said they're positioning themselves to get to FBS within the next 5 years. He didn't say they're gonna try and go next year and I bet behind closed doors Haslam and Costello would say the same thing. Plus I think the MWC is done adding for the time being. The next domino will be if/when UNLV or New Mexico leaves to try and get into the PAC. That's what the Griz, cats, and SDSU should be preparing themselves for but I don't see that happening in the next 1-2 years.

You could see this one coming from a mile away. The Mountain West is going to want to add 2 teams. One being UC Davis and the other being South Dakota State. NDSU is kind of out on their own, adding SDSU gives them a natural rival in the conference.

If Haslam said that behind closed doors he would be lying. Where is the extra money going to come from? I’m not saying there is something that the AD should be doing differently but they are positioning themselves to ride out the FCS until the end and not preparing to move to FBS imminently.

This article sounds to me that under the current state of things Montana State has no interest in leaving the FCS. Key statement being that Leon Costello wants to be competing for and winning championships. That just isn’t as realistic in the MWC as the BSC. Another interesting thing that is relevant to Montana is attendance being a big funder to both programs. There is a risk that moving up and not being competitive will cause attendance to crater.

Totally. I bet Bizon fans will be begging the administration to drop back down to the FCS in no time. Since when did sports become this whole competition thing where people want to push themselves? In my day it was all about staying in one's safe space and making friends along the way.
No doubt that FCS is watered down. And I guess moving up to FBS might be the best of two bad choices at this point. But with an expanded playoff system the bowls are really not anything to get overly excited about. With even 5-7 teams declining bowl bids and players opting out most are poorly attended and watched. The regular season in FBS would be the highlight not a bowl game. At least in Pop Tart Bowl you can eat the mascot if you win.

UM athletics has been positioning itself for a couple decades to be in position to react and make decisions as the landscape of college sports, especially football and evolves and changes. That’s one of the reasons that the facilities keep being improved. One reason is so that there would be fewer facilities costs to move up if that became the best choice. It has been clear all along that FCS is the best place for UM for certain reasons including the costs to participate and be successful. But with Coolidge athletics changing and evolving, that may eventually not be the case or the best place.

The reason teams are opting out of bowl games is because they are being decimated by the transfer portal. The unlimited transfers are a big issue in FCS and FBS.

Like I have said in previous posts some of UM’s facilities are better than P4 programs. For example the weight room at UM is larger than at the University of Arizona.
