Joining the Mountain West would run an $8MM - $9MM annual deficit - can we overcome that?

Considering we're one of the lowest in terms of State support I think of we did a few things like increase student fees, get more money from our BOR and even have our own TV deal with the State just like NDSU (I think they get 2 million to broadcast their games throughout the ND) in addition to a way better media deal we could make it happen.

Granted would have to be as a Football only option but not impossible, also saw something interesting theorized where both us and MSU would move up to different Conferences (1 to the PAC, 1 to the MWC) and equally split the revenue between both schools semi UCLA/CAL situation.

Would eliminate the biggest hurdle of having 2 Montana schools on 1 Conference and it's be easier to demand the Brawl as the last game of the year vs both of us trying to get into a single Conference. Don't know how popular an idea that'd be to not be in the same Conference as MSU but as long as it'd be garunteed to play them in the Brawl (and 2 games in Basketball) I think it could work.
Football only is also a non starter unless it comes with an invite to the Summit.

Thinking outside the box on moving up too two different conferences is what's needed in this new NCAA landscape. What about the NCAA approved Jersey patches, schools are allowed 2 patches on uniforms and one one equipment, for instance UNLV secured a 5 year-11 million deal for a company to advertise on their jersey patches. It all adds up, we need new leadership to see these through plus a new TV deal, I heard the BSC gives peanuts to UM.

So off the top of my head:

-Football only with Olys in the Summit (Big Sky might make exception/change rule for us and MSU due to our value but doubtful).

-Beach Volleyball a cheap way to get the 1 needed sport we need

-Push for Football Only package deal with MSU but be open to 2 different Conferences for us and the Kittens (garunteed Brawl game end of the year). UCLA/CAL situation to ensure we get the same amount of $$ to appease BOR

-Jersey + Equipment Patches, better Conference Media deal, increased State and student support in addition to a single $$ game a year to afford move up.

It's not impossible, really hope the new President is capable and willing to think outside the box, with the NDSU move up the writing imo is on the wall more then ever. We need to adapt, get creative and push or we can look forward to playing Portland State and Northern Colorado for the foreseeable future.

Did UM need to think outside of the box with a 3-3-5 base defense?
Playing a 3-3-5 defense has no relevance in thinking on outside the box how to generate funds to move up. You had coach who was stubborn in his ways, didn't do social media, interviews, ect, leaves-retires, goes to IL and all of a sudden is more approachable in his first week than all the years at UM. Adapt of get left behind.

It amazes me that people somehow believe that the University hasn't done it's due diligence when it comes to moving to FBS football and continue to spitball avenues for revenue like no one else has ever thought of them.
That may be the case, the problem is that while other ADs and Athletic Departments keep their fanbase in the loop on costs to move up, fundraising projects/goals (Look at Boise State AD) UM has not been great in this area. Take the Jersey Patches, schools including Montana State are out publicly trying to sponsors and more revenue we have heard nothing from UM Dept.

Didn’t Haslam say that UM is letting the conference lead on this? You need to pay more attention.

One thing I know: As a top revenue earner, it's always best to follow the BSC's lead on things. They have top men in place, I tell ya. Top. Men. ;)
UM is willing to help and look out for the conference. Team player. UM hasn't been a pig about demanding to do its own tv/media contract or take a bigger piece of the pie. I don't know if you have law partners, but if so, do you demand more money or a bonus every time you bring in something good or get a good result? I sure didn't in my years in law firms.

Maybe too much of a team player. What that gets us isn't always clear.

Agreed - I'd argue that team player or not - if you're pulling the majority of the attendance and recognition weight for the last 20+ years....

If we were say EWU who were making those demands after doing not much after winning a national championship in the 2010's - yeah, that'd be ridiculous.
