I think UM had a ski team in the 60s. I recall a men’s competitor. We also had baseball.
Easy answer: Just make the dance/pom/cheer teams a sanctioned sport. Those girls work their ASSES off, and the hours aren't limited because they "aren't a sport". My daughter went to school full time, spent 30-40 hrs a week in the dance studio, traveled, did competitions, etc., etc...There's 25-35 girls (and some guys) on these teams. They'd LOVE to be under the umbrella of the AD...they're already there, and the money is already being spent.
Makes sense to me!

Good info, thanks for the write up. As many stated, you're going to be looking for the fans to foot much of the bill with higher ticket costs, and the students thru increased fees. My question is, do you think that fans will buy in? I think the answer is yes, initially, but the longer it goes with winning 5-8 games and playing meaningless bowl games, do you think people will keep showing up just because "it's D1 football?" I'm not convinced. I'm also not as convinced as others that the P4 are going to break away. They may, or they may expand the playoff down the road to the B10 proposal of 24 teams with a bit more lip service to the G5. It's not a bad system for them, really. G6 and FCS doing player development for them. Easy wins they can put on the calendar. Potential antitrust issues for freezing out the G6 if they do break away (per Schmidt). I don't know. The whole thing is far from certain and if there's no path to a G6 playoff, I'm not interested at this point.

Fans will keep showing up in FCS or FBS because the Griz are western Montana’s NFL team. They are the most popular sporting event in the region regardless of the competition or circumstances with the team. In 2012 when the Griz had a losing record they were still second in the FCS in attendance behind only App State.

Some fans will buy in, but some won’t and some won’t be able to afford to. UM tik prices are already high.
80% of UMs attendance (tickets sold) come from season ticket sales which are committed long before the season starts.
That is what NDSU used to say and then their crowds dropped off

Anecdotally, a lot of people that are fans of G5 schools would rather remain uncompetitive but in the "top tier" of football, rather than break off and form their own playoff. I think what may ultimately drive a split will be private equity. Basically the privatization of the P4.

I know idaho fans were pissed when they came back down but not much argument this is where they needed to be. I think the Cats and griz would both continue to draw, especially early on, but I still question if that lasts absent a playoff path. I would still support, for instance, but I'm not going to be as religious about getting to the game, traveling for a one off bowl game, etc.
Let's be honest with the reason why NDSU's attendance dropped off... because NDSU games became predictable. Fans got tired of already knowing the outcome. Blow out 90% of their schedule, with maybe only one challenging game a year vs South Dakota State.
NDSU's attendance will start increasing again with this FBS move. App State's attendance increased when they moved up. So did JMU's. So did Liberty's. There is a pattern here...
Was there a lot of angst this year with the Griz schedule?

I love that model! However, it will never happen because the financial liabilities and revenue losses tied to relegation make it impossible for schools and conferences to support.
The trade off could be 1 to 4 playoff games at the FCS level or as an FBS team you could try and schedule a p4 team in the non- conference schedule like and USC, Oregon, Or somebody like LSU at their place.
If you do well enough to get a bowl game and play against a Michigan, or Tennesse or another p4 team like that in a destination city what would you choose? ..
My choice is obvious..
