Joining the Mountain West would run an $8MM - $9MM annual deficit - can we overcome that?

Over the last 5 years (2022–2026), the Mountain West Conference accumulated 30 active NCAA Tournament units (also known as March Madness credits). Each unit generates roughly \(\$2\) million

I see that the MW is getting $14-15 million per year from that. How much of that will NDSU get?

That move made no sense, but I think they are able to get ncaa credits for MBB and WBB, plus all the exposure being on TV. I bet they make up for it in donations and sponsorships with jersey patches. Makes you wonder if they know something we don’t they rather move up even with no media rights than play in the FCS.

I think everybody knows what there is to know, but the ability to move up isn’t feasible for most.
 
Annnd UM is never moving to the FBS, and neither are the Puds. That is wishful thinking, or not. The state doesn't have the money to support the schools, and even if the money was there, it's Montana and while people may love the teams, they love their money more and no one is willing to pay more in taxes to support either school moving up. Because, really, that's what it comes down to, money.

I was born, raised and lived in Montana most of my life. I think I have a pretty good feel of what Montanans are like. You can hardly get a school bond passed to educate the kids, let alone try to get funding approved to pay for two Universities that at least half of the Montanans have little actual direct link to (to include the transplants) the universities.

It's fun/frustrating to speculate though.

I’m nearing that point. The right people aren’t interested in playing up, so I might join the ranks pretending it’s somehow better playing in the lower division. I’ve said it for years: It’s like the youngest kid who knows he has to sit in the middle of the back seat with his feet on the hump, so he pretends he actually prefers it. I’ll just become a hump boy.

I'm a native Montanan and would gladly pay more in taxes to see Montana compete at a higher level. So... I'd say you're incorrect. At least these taxes would go to something people are passionate about instead of bullshit.
