John Nguyen & Jeremy Calhoun

What an incredible 1-2 punch these guys have turned into for this season

Nguyen: 370 rushing / 175 receiving / 91 total yards per game average / 2 total TDs
Calhoun: 319 rushing / 60 receiving / 63.2 total yards per game average / 10 total TDs

Nguyen has fit a pretty good role with this offense as the pass-blocker but also a great scat-back and change of pace / quick running back. I think after the Poly game the shift to use his best skills and get him away from being the "power" guy has really helped.

While Calhoun is still young he's sure showing that he's on the brink of being the total package with great vision while running, good power, and improving catching and pass protection. In the years ahead Calhoun is going to be our #1 RB and with the way he's piling up TDs I can't help but wonder if he'll chase some records. As a true Soph that's played just 16 total games he's got 18 rushing TDs (plus 1 receiving) already.

Additionally, look at their improvement from last year vs this year:

Nguyen:

2015: 4.6 ypc / 65 ypg rushing / 12.2 ypg receiving / 0.23 TDs per game (had 3 total)
2016: 4.9 ypc / 62 ypg rushing / 29.2 ypg receiving / 0.34 TDs per game (has 2 total)

Calhoun:

2015: 2.9 ypg / 29 ypg rushing / 3.3 ypg receiving / 0.9 TDs per game (had 9 total)
2016: 6.4 ypc / 53 ypg rushing / 10 ypg receiving / 1.67 TDs per game (has 10 total)

------------

This is also a testament to the improved play of the O-line which has showed some good improvement from last year to this year.

Basically these two account for 1/3 of the total offensive yards per game on average.

Many get frustrated by the running play that gets stuffed at the LOS. Effective offenses balance running and passing so the defense must honor both in their schemes. The stuffed run isn't any different than the incomplete pass. Nguyen especially gets stuffed a fair amount, but if there is a hole there, he is excellent at popping through it for significant gains.

He does go down a little easier than Calhoun. The tough part is actually getting good contact on Nguyen. He is so shifty and gets a lot of 7 to 20 yard runs, just not many break away runs. During his 81 yard run, everyone in my section commented how nobody caught him from behind. We were all shocked. I think he was a little shocked too.

Could Chase's total TD record be in jeopardy? I haven't checked, but it seems like Calhoun is already on pace to break it, or is at least ahead of where Chase was as a soph

I think I remember seeing something that Calhoun is on pace to break the record. Chase only played ST his freshman year, his first TD didn't come till his Soph year. A lot can change between now and then, but I have really been impressed with Jeremy this year and believe he could go down as another great RB when its all said and done.

FYI should be 2015 and 2016

I think BW is distracted this week. Then again, I did notice it either. :thumb:

I've been distracted this whole month, lol - but thanks for the catch! :thumb:

lol no worries you're doing great. On topic - I've been really impressed with how Nguyen and Calhoun have been finishing runs. They have been getting a lot of extra yards after contact.

I think Reynolds record was single-season rushing TDs which is 24 and holds the career rushing TD record at 54.

That means at this point in his career Calhoun has at the minimum to score 37 more TDs to break the record (5 games this year, 11 the next two). That, of course, is the bare minimum because obviously the playoffs would give him more opportunities.

He would need to essentially need to stay near his 2016 pace of scoring. Lets just say he finishes with 7 more this year, so 16 total rushing TDs. That leaves 29 over the course of two seasons, or 14.5 per season. It's possible. Especially if the team can steadily get into the playoffs and win a few games each season (if not more) like Chase had the luxury of. Lets just say over the next 3 years he can get 6 to 8 more games for chances - that then means he would need to average just a little over 1 rushing TD per game to break the record.

Sitting at the in the end zone I was impressed with his ability to keep pace or best the safeties and corners. I have noticed this year that Nguyen's runs have been more vertical up the field as well as a noticeable improvement in his top speed. Speed coaches must have been putting in some work with him from what I can tell.

Top five, all purpose yds. vs. Sac:

ALL PURPOSE Rush Rcv KR PR IR Total
John Nguyen 116 14 0 20 0 150
Joey Counts 21 60 0 0 0 81
Justin Strong 0 0 0 0 78 78
Colin Bingham 0 77 0 0 0 77
Jeremy Calhoun 62 10 0 0 0 72

Nope. Nobody beats this.

75 was spot on with the "snow" TD by Chase.

I like the heck out of Little John but I wish they would keep him from trying to return punts!

That is the biggest head-scratcher for me every single Saturday. Why not put Justin Calhoun, Homan, or Lyons back there?

Obviously, because they just don't see things as clearly as you boys do. We must have a word with the poor bastards.
