John Hoyt Field??

The Hoyt sign on the field was removed earlier in the season. Was told that it was part of the agreement with the Washingtons for the recent big donation. Heard that UM didn't bother to check with O'Day, Hogan, Dennison and others to see what the deal was with Hoyt (and perhaps Edwards and Ryan), when the donation was made. Agreement apparently was silent on length. Those guys apparently said that it was to be in perpetuity. Now UM is in a pickle. While Hoyt is gone, those other donors aren't. Stay tuned.

Ah yes the Troll Brigade. Since Hoyt made the donation before Stitt was hired at the School of Mines, I doubt it. Maybe you can put one together for him though. Plenty of yellow paper at Staples.

Just curious if you're mad at Shannon for never putting out a press release thanking Rachel Staudacher after she left the team?

Not good. A famous financier, who made a few hundred million bucks off of the Milwaukee Road bankruptcy, got into the donation business big time with his ill-gotten loot. Endowing an art building at some fancy school back east, he asked about the naming rights, and was told that yes, for that amount, they would name the building after him. "How long does it stay there?" he asked. "Oh, it's in perpetuity." "How long is that," he responded. "For you, seventy five years."

Start a relevant thread about it. You know, there's even a Basketball forum for that.

Hmmm, Hoyt tangled in the courtroom with Ron McDonald often enough, and Ron was attorney for Washington Corps. Both gentlemen are now deceased, but I understand from Cliff Edwards there was no love lost between them. Ron had beaten John in a personal injury suit against MRL in 1999 and John got the District Court ruling in favor of MRL reversed on appeal in 2000.

Hard to believe anyone might be that petty, and it may not be true at all, but there is a "connection" there.

Should be named Don Read Field in my opinion.

Sadly UM lately names things based on money donated...Washington Grizzly stadium....Hoyt....now even law school. There is a price for everything, maybe someone will "buy" the rights for the field name and make it Read field in his honor. Or PR can buy the rights and make it Gregorak field.

Sadly? That's an odd way to look at it. Naming rights mean that money is coming in, and that's a good thing.

Take a look at any college venue in the county. They are all named after the money.

And my opinion is that is sad.....I hate the commercialization of it all. Just so NASCAR like. I realize the money is needed....but sure wish the donors would say....we want it named Read Field etc. Sometimes the right thing to do is to do things without need for personal attention. Anonymous donations are so much classier. Even Hoyt field, was not paid for by Hoyt....Edwards didn't say make it Edwards field he wanted to honor another. Let's hope Lambeau field doesn't become Chucky Cheese field.

Well the new field certainly isn't going to be named anything, considering it wasn't paid for by a generous UM donor. I guess you could say the Washington Huskies could be considered a donor since they are paying for the field, and in return, they get a 50-7 or worse win over the Griz. Fair trade? lol. IN any event, that game is paying for the new field, as Montana worked out a deal that they didn't have to make the payment until sometime late in 2017 or even 2018.

The majority of the cost of the initial field turf field was the work done under the turf. I was told the turf was only $300,000 of the cost.

Is it accurate that Hoyt didn't donate anything for the field?

I gotta say, once it's John Hoyt field it should stay John Hoyt field. It's a matter of common courtesy to Mr. Hoyt and the folks who made a donation in his honor. I understand that keeping the name on the field could cause some discomfort years later, but that's the price you pay. If 'John Hoyt' was removed to rename the field for the Washington's, I'm sure some other edifice could be found to honor them. btw, I really do appreciate the Washington's support for UM and Griz football, it's just that the field is already named.

Fair enough, what then is the conflict that creates the need to un-name John Hoyt field?

I don't think the field itself is going to be renamed for the Washingtons.

So why was it removed? Washingtons didn't want it there? Putting up for grabs by a future large donation ? Trying to sell rights to someone? Inquiring minds want to know.

Down the road in Bozo....Reno H Sales stadium is now "Bobcat Stadium" after remodeling. Maybe Tidy Cat will buy rights to officially call it the Litter Box????

Didn't Mr. Sales get arrested for soliciting a prostitute? Special case, act like a jerk and your name may come off the stadium.

I was told that it was part of the agreement or deal with the Washingtons in their big donation, but I don't know.

You may be thinking of the stadium donor Martel, a construction guy, who got some bad press regarding having a girlfriend that he bought nice things for. Think he was married. Older guy, not that I have anything against older guys.

I don't think the Washington's want the field name after them, they have the biggest name sake going that goes everywhere.

WA_GRIZ

It is an institution of it's self, has meaning and a soul and a hell of a reputation.

I apologize to Mr. Sales and promise to never call the stadium in Bozo anything but "Reno H. Sales Stadium" Now can anyone tell me why John Hoyt's name has been taken off the field?
