Joey Counts on crutches?

Was that on the golf course, Carl?[/quote]

Nicely done, a lot of guys don't get the reference. :thumb:

As far as the redshirt goes I have no clue how that works since he did redshirt as a freshman and they burned that mid-season when Dan Moore got injured. I think the medical redshirt is separate but I'm sure somebody on here will know definitively.

Then his normal redshirt year is still available. 5 years to play 4; not difficult to comprehend. Medical redshirt not required.

But they burned it so he could play in one game and rack up 20 yards against ISU ( ) besides that... since it got burned, is a Medical RS and a RS two completely different things?

Kemajic is right, when they pulled his redshirt after Moore got hurt he went back to square one, so he can take the Medical Hardship Waiver next year if needed.

If he would have used his redshirt last year he might have had a problem, the 5-year clock rule usually keeps athletes from taking a MHW after taking a freshman redshirt unless they can prove that the first redshirt was due to circumstances outside of their control, meaning an injury. In that case where 2 seasons were lost due to injury they could apply to the NCAA to get a clock extension or 6th year waiver, and the chances are decent if the injuries are both legit and well documented.

I'm not sure how it would have worked if he wouldn't have been able to use a MHW next year, would he have the option of giving up his scholarship for a year and returning in 2015 as a junior, or would he have to stay on the team and only be able to play 3 years?

He actually played in 5 games last year, too bad it worked out that way but kind of how last year went all around.

Damn, thats tough to follow. At least I've got a better idea tho. Thanks for that. Maybe he should eat some deer horns or whatever that was that Ray Lewis was eating lol

"Tough to follow" pretty much sums up the entire NCAA rulebook.

 Thats for sure! 5 years, 2 RS available, eligibility, whaaaat? :?

It is not that hard to follow. He has 5 years to play 4. Most players use their redshirt year when they are true freshman to get bigger and stronger. When you "burn" a redshirt year, it doesn't go away. They can use it at any time. If he does not play next year, then that is his redshirt year. Whether it is due to injury or by choice, it is not a "medical redshirt". It is just a redshirt year. JJ used his redshirt year taking care of his legal troubles. Counts played as a true freshman so he still has his redshirt year to use.

A medical redshirt is occasionally granted to a player who misses most of two years due to injury. It is 6 years to play 4. They have to petition the NCAA to get that year. Counts does not have to apply for it. He has the redshirt available.

I' don't see how Counts was mis-diagnosed. I was told the Tuesday following the EWU game he had torn ligaments in his foot, including a partially torn achilles, and it would require surgery.

No link. I bumped into a friend of Joey's dad, he relayed the news.

That is terrible news for Joey. Hopefully they can get him the redshirt and not cost him a year, it should be pretty straight forward. I am now waiting for someone on here to blame the misdiagnoses on the implementation of Obamacare. LOL
no it was Engstrom's fault.

They had thought it was his achilles but apparently it is ligaments with his big toe that requires surgery and heals very slowly. I'm not a doc, just relaying what I heard.

What is there to not understand? He played as a freshman (no redshirt); he played as a sophmore (no redshirt); he now has 3 years to play his last 2 years of eligibility. So he can take off next year as a redshirt year (just as JJ did) and still have his two years of eligibility. The medical redshirt comes into play when a player has already redshirted and due to injury applies for a 6th year to complete his 4 years of eligibility.

The term "burned a redshirt" is misleading and it would be better if it were not used. It simply means the redshirt allowance is deferred to another year. It is only "burned" if it is never used later.

i believe kem is correct. counts has three to play two.

He is correct. It is not that hard to get. 5 to play 4. He played as a true freshman and sophomore. He still has a redshirt year to use. People get so caught up in a medical redshirt year which are actually quite rare.

Medical Redshirt rules and egriz are too hard of maths to explain. You're right Kem - seems like this board has this discussion about a player every year.
