Just saw this on twitter, I'm betting Joey uses his Red Shirt this year then.

Junior running back Joey Counts, who has battled injuries for most of his college football career with the Grizzlies, announced on his Facebook site Wednesday that he had surgery on his foot in Texas. He included a photo in which he is laying in a hospital bed with his right foot heavily bandaged.

Counts reported that his foot has been injured for the past eight months. He was hoping the injury would heal the “old-fashioned way” with time, but surgery was necessary.

The 5-foot-9, 215-pound Arizona native was hoping to be ready for August camp. Back in 2013 he was UM’s fourth-leading rusher with 207 yards. He played in eight games, missing the last five because of an injury.

In 2012 he was scheduled to redshirt but was activated due to an injury to a teammate.

Hate that he had to have surgery but it may work out better for him in the end (both medically and for playing time). Such a log jam at RB this year (if guys stay healthy). Now get to have a 2 year rotation of Nguyen, Counts, and Favors for 2015 and 2016.

Fall depth will probably go, Canada, Van, Nguyen, Favors.

Hope the injury bug doesnt get this group, good thing Canada's been our workhorse for a few years now.

Thanks for the replies. My spouse asked me, and I honestly did not know if the cost of such surgery was covered totally by the student/his or her insurance/his or her parents, or if the university had some sort of obligation. I surmised it was mostly the student's own responsibility, but I didn't know.

If the NCAA was treated like the profit business that it is, it'd be a workman's comp injury.. however, I imagine insurance takes care of it.

There was a post late last season saying that he was likely to miss the 2014 season for a foot injury

I think they were trying rehab instead of surgery but didn't work out, should have just had the procedure done back then.

I know huh. I can't even remember who posted it but someone said they talked to Joey's dad and he was in pretty rough shape back then. But a healthy Joey in 2015 can't be a bad thing!

It was NAIA, but I was injured when wrestling in college. My personal insurance covered what it could and then the college's insurance acted as secondary insurance so nothing out of pocket for me/my family.
