Jody Sears Out at Weber

Knowing a little about Weber and they have some issues with the NCAA right now and they are image conscious, I wonder if the UofM issues real or imagined, might dog Pflugrad's chances at WSU. That is at least what I hear down here in southern Idaho. Plus, the other rumor floating around is that WSU may or may not have a short list and had that short list after Sears was hired anyway that includes several assistants from USU, Wisconsin, and BYU.

Personally, Pflugrad could do some good things at UND. Then again, I think Pflugrad is going to be successful wherever he ends up.

Pflugrad is one of the final candidates for UND. Guess the Grand Forks Herald had a write up in him and some others a few days back. Wonder if this opening will change his mind.

I have heard people float RP's name when talking about the UND job, but have seen nothing substantial that he is being considered. Also UND has not publicly announced any final candidates or even where they are in the hiring process.

A UND buddy told me there was a blurb about him in the Grand Forks Herald as one of the candidates being considered. But I just checked their archives and didn't see a thing. I'll see if my buddy can find the article.

I know the local sport writers were throwing out names right after the job opened, but nothing more than that.

Hard to believe that just five years ago Weber seemed to have almost arrived at the top tier of the Big Sky. I think the beatdown paydays against FBS teams sapped the team's will early in every season.

Agreed. Weber's had some messed up scheduling the past several years. Making the playoffs when you have 2 FBS games every year on your schedule is kind of tough. That has to be rough on the players when the schedule leaves very little room for losses in a tough Big Sky conference if you want to make the playoffs.

2008
Two D2 games, 2 FBS games, 10-4 record, got into the playoffs.
W vs Montana-Western: 62-6
W vs Dixie St: 44-7
L @Hawaii: 36-17
L @ #17 Utah: 37-21

2009:
Two FBS games to begin the season 0-2. Squeaked into the playoffs at 7-4 (ended up 7-5).
L @Wyoming: 29-22
L @Colorado State: 24-23

2010:
Two FBS games, one at the beginning of the season, one as the last game. They were 6-4 going into that last game with still some playoff hopes, but had to play @Texas Tech.. No Playoffs for them! Ended the season 6-5.
L @Boston College: 38-20
L @Texas Tech: 64-21

2011:
Started the season with 2 FBS losses, finished 5-6, no playoffs.
L @Wyoming: 35-32
L @Utah State: 54-17

2012:
Started the season with 2 FBS losses again, finished 2-9, no playoffs.
L @Fresno State: 37-10
L @BYU: 45-13

2013:
2 FBS beatings again early in the season. Finished 2-10, no playoffs.
L @Utah: 70-7
L @Utah State: 70-6

One name that has come up as a possible replacement (just wild guesses at this point) is Brent Pease, if he is indeed fired from Florida as is being reported. Being a former UM QB and coach, just wondering what you all think of Pease?

If you want a coach that gets in the face of players screaming obscenities, then Pease is your guy. He wasn't called a "Red Ass" at UM for nothin'.

Well his stock may be falling but not so far as to end up at Weber State...... he did well considering injuries etc and his departure is more a concession for Will Muschamp to stay for another year than anything. The "money" simply didn't like his offense. The buyout of Peases contract is close to 1.2 million. maybe Weber can afford him but likley not.

Seriously, I don't want to see Pflugrad being HC at any Big Sky program. Give him 3 to 4 years, I would not want to face his offenses. UND would be a great fit for him. They already have the WR and young QB's in place too.

I kinda want Pease at Wyoming when Christensen is let go.

Been a long time since he was here. I'm sure he has calmed down a lot. I for one was a different person 20 yrs ago than I am now. Age seems to mellow people a bit.

Weber would be really stupid to NOT hire Pflu. I don't think Pease will humble himself enough to take an FCS job but either Pflu or Pease at Weber would really stink for the Griz when Mick retires

Do you see Pflu getting one of those HC jobs? Or is he a year or two away?

Pflugrad deserves another shot at head coach somewhere whether it is Weber, North Dakota, or elsewhere. F**K Dennison!

Robin surely deserves and will get another shot as a head coach in time. I hope it's not at a BSC school however at least not yet!

I honestly could see Robin getting a OC job at the likes of Oregon State. I have a feeling Riley will stay this year but other coaching changes will take place. Riley has said in the past he thought about going to the spread and even has recruited a bit towards it already. Robin would be a great fit in Corvallis and could easily be next up for HC when Riley does decide to retire! Robin would already have a great foot hold recruiting wise in Oregon!

Other thing to remember with Weber State is that Sears wasn't their original choice. John L. Smith left them suddenly to take over the dumpster fire that was Arkansas. So they went with Sears as a fill-in, and it turned out terribly. Be interesting to see where Pflugrad goes.

Utah assistant Jay Hill takes Weber State head job
Weber State didn’t go far to find its next football coach as sources have confirmed with The Salt Lake Tribune that Utah assistant Jay Hill will be announced as the Wildcats’ coach on Thursday.

Hill has been a member of Utah’s staff since 2005, when he was named the cornerbacks coach and co-special teams coordinator by Kyle Whittingham.

Previously, the 43-year-old Hill was a graduate assistant with the Utah program from 2001-2004, making him the longest tenured member of Utah’s staff other than Whittingham.

Hill has continued to coach the special teams throughout his career in addition to the tight ends and running backs.

Hill replaces Jody Sears, who was fired after the Wildcats finished the season 2-10, including a 1-7 mark in the Big Sky Conference.

In addition to his coaching abilities, Hill has established a reputation as a solid recruiter — a characteristic that could go a long way in helping him rebuild Weber State’s program.

He was named to Rivals.com’s Class of 2009 Top Recruiters and as one of the Top 10 Recruiters in the Pac-12 in 2012.

Hill grew up in Lehi and played corner for Utah after transferring from Ricks College, where he was a 1997 junior college All-American and the team’s MVP.

He led the Utes in interceptions his senior year and was named the team’s Defensive MVP.

Weber State has struggled in recent years, but athletic director Jerry Bovee has expressed confidence the program will improve with the Wildcats opening a new indoor practice facility in October and making recent renovations to Stewart Stadium. Other coaches who were linked to the job opening were former BYU quarterback and offensive coordinator Brandon Doman and Nick Howell, BYU’s current defensive coordinator.
