JLM Punt Return

The interesting, actual football related questions are, “What price does the kicking team pay when they have to constantly kick away from a dangerous receiver?” “What should be the strategy of the return team when you are almost certain that the ball will be kicked away from your designated return man?”

Well, if they're trying to play keep-away from him, they're either:

1. Trying to rugby kick it, low and hard to handle (leads to either long rolls that they can cover or down, or...long rolls that JLM picks up in a crowd that he scoots through, leaving no one home to track him down [I'd say he showed at UNI that being in a crowd is not an issue], or short kicks that JLM fields on the fly with a head of steam before the cover team can get down the field);
2. Kicking it out of bounds (with the lack of accuracy inherent in punting and the lack of great directional punters these days, this probably generally means shorter fields); or
3. Not kicking it at all, but going for it on riskier 4th downs.

All three are probably wins for the Griz.

Not to mention that this sets up tactical advantages for the Griz. They can either:

1. All out block, giving JLM a cleaner shot at an open catch with field to roam; or
2. Go for the blocked kick, at least causing the punter pause, and at best getting either a block or some punter miscue, knowing that JLM can still probably do something on his own with the punt even if he doesn't have perfect blocking.

Weapon.

Just have to get them into 4th down....

For chrissakes, can we not get this guy the ball on a jet sweep or a fly sweep or something? I say put the ball in his hands as much as possible! (Unless that's what the other team is expecting, of course.) :)

If this return needed to get more impressive, check out Bertram's game video. The punt return play begins at 1:02:29. Only 9 blockers and JLM walk on the field. At 1:02:35, you can see the ref showing 10.

Maybe kickoff return team should try only 10....11 can't get it past the 30. Somethings wrong with special teams that's for sure.....maybe new coordinator should have a heart to heart with Stitt, not cutting it that's for sure.

Maybe JLM should return kicks.

We are in a weekly playoff mode - loser out.

Team averaging about 19 yards per kick return, that compiled with poor coverage is costing too many yards a game in other team's favor. With high scoring games that results in a lot of kickoffs snd losing the portion of the game (about 7 yards difference between receiving yards and yards given up in coverage) is shooting the team in the foot every kickoff. Not getting job done with either special teams coaching or personnel. Needs fixed one way or another that's for sure.
