At some point early in Saturday's TV broadcast of the Montana Grizzlies' upset win over No. 3 Northern Iowa, just after Jerry Louie-McGee danced for plus-yardage on his first punt return of the day, one of the broadcast's color commentators dubbed him "Mr. Electricity."

Turns out "Mr. Electricity" was about the best description you could have come up with.

Louie-McGee would go on to rack up a game-high 162 all-purpose yards and thrill Griz fans with one of the most electric punt returns for a touchdown in Montana history to give UM the edge in a tense 20-14 win.

With a freshman breakout performance for the ages, Louie-McGee has been awarded the ROOT Sports Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week the league announced on Monday.

The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native led the Grizzlies in pass receptions, hauling in five for a total of 33 yards. His biggest impact, however, came in the punt return game, where he ran back three punts for 118 yards, highlighted by an 81-yard touchdown.

"I'm so glad we gave him a shot to return punts. He basically gave us a chance to win the ballgame because of his punt return," said head coach Bob Stitt.

"We knew he could do it, you just had to get him the ball in the open. People don't realize how hard he is to tackle. Most punt returns will be one where they get through and they make one guy miss. He made like 11 people miss. It was crazy. That was one of the best punt returns, if not the best punt returns I've ever seen."

Louie-McGee's 118 punt return yards against UNI is the third-highest single game performance in the nation so far this season. Two players sit in front of him on the national list, with the national leader only tallying eight more yards.

With the addition of the 81-yard punt return on Saturday, he leads the nation in punt return yards, averaging 39.9 yards per game this season.

"Mr. Electricity" was just one member of a standout special teams unit on Saturday. Redshirt freshman kicker Tim Semenza was once again perfect with the boot this week, going two-for-two on field goals and two-for-two on PATs for a personal haul of eight points.

If JLM can stay healthy and god I hope so he is going to be fun to watch the next few years. How would you like to be a DC trying to game plan against him, and he is a freakin freshman WOW. Kind of reminds me of Taiwan Jones who played for Eastern a few years ago, only with maybe quicker juke moves.

He's quicker than Mariani. Much smaller, though. Probably as fast.

And seems to have eyes in the back of his head. That spatial awareness thing--he's got it.

Also, make no doubt: He best in space. Travon, move over. TV would make one, maybe two killer moves in a run; JLM can throw 5 or 6 down without batting an eye.

I must admit that it's hilarious watching anyone try to tackle him, only to hit the turf in the opposite direction he's gone.

Damn glad he's a Griz.

Finally got a chance to actually watch the game. JLM is good, no doubt. John seems to be a little more shifty and aggressive this year as well. Seems to have done some footwork drills. Favors, yes. Didn't take notes, but it looks like among the ball carriers some visible improvements and that this promises to be an outstanding group, and will carry the team this year on the offense.

Remember last year when Stitt was quoted as saying he didn't really care for punt returns; he wanted his offense to get the ball as soon as possible? JLM should have him believing.

Guess he didn't predict the offense would struggle as much as it has haha

Definitely night and day compared to SFU. Really hope that continues through the season. I think the offense will improve once the receivers get more experience. If that can happen....the BSC is in trouble.

It's like they oil him up before he takes the field, nobody can get a grasp on him. It's unexplainable.

Hey, don't go giving Sac State any ideas.

I always get worried about a block in the back penalty with how many times he changes direction. Very disciplined of the return group to maintain the blocks...legally.

On the other hand, if each player makes just one good block, he's probably gone.

Block in the back on a punt or kickoff should cost the offending team 2 points. Too many times a nice return is negated by this foul. NFL and NCAA want to limit injuries on KO and punts. This IMO would really help.

At one point when everyone on the field except JLM was confused to what was happening, I don't think anyone was blocking!

After the first JLM punt return at UNI, I liked the comment - "Louie-McGee avoided the early tackle without fair catching, showing some fearlessness out there".
