JJ Sits Out Practice

Guys, It's a physical sport. Under center or in the gun, they get hurt. JJ was hurt a lot of the 2011 year and he was in the gun all the time. Spin it all you want. Under center, freshman center, blah, blah, blah. It is part of the game. No one who spends any time on the field gets through the year without playing hurt.

Well folks, if any of you need more proof that legalizing marijuana is not a good idea......I give you exhibit A.

Make it four Boilermakers.

The thread title is JJ SITS OUT PRACTICE.

This should open some eyes as to why the Griz play-calling has limited the read-option. The coaches are hesitant to call this high QB contact play because of Johnson's 2 concussions and high ankle sprain.

Well duh!

Well if true that's a real bummer. At times JJ seems to be a tuff kid. However he does seem to be a little on the fragile side. Some guys just absorb hits better than others or just built different to handle those hits. I always fear JJ taking a good hit just about every snap and that's it! Please not saying he is not tuff or weak. He just seems to get injured more than some.

True statement...the last thing we need is JJ getting seriously hurt. To bad tho because he really knows how to run that offense.

JJ has taken most of his hits trying to hang in a non-existent pocket (though it seems to be improving as of late). Yes option QB's take some shots but most are hits to the body. Just look at Oregon's QBs. There have been injuries over the years but not the hits to the head variety. Certainly some ankles but it is easier to protect yourself when you are the move and can duck instead of trying to stand tall looking down field and getting driven into the turf. Option QBs have to be durable and I think JJ is more than tough enough in the right offensive scheme. Imagine just the opposite. Ask a tall, slow QB to run the option. They probably would be dead about midway through the season.

Two of the top 3 rushers in our conference are QB's. Chris Brown has 180 rushing attempts has been sacked 11 times. Dakota Prukop has 142 rushing attempts and has been sacked 17 times. JJ has just 24 rushing attempts and has been sacked just 8 times. Northern Colorado's QB has been sacked 44 times. EWU's QB has been sacked 29 times (which might explain why both of those teams are down the depth chart in their QB situation). I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that both Brown and Prukop have taken much more of a beating this year than JJ, and have sustained more hits by factor of about 10.

Difference between getting hit scrambling and getting hit in the pocket is..when you're scrambling, you dictate where you get hit...while compared to standing in the pocket and getting blasted unexpectedly.

Pocket QB's are much more likely to get injured than a mobile QB. - Robert Griffin III

A hit is a hit no matter if you're expecting it or not. Either way you can get a concussion, sprain an ankle, break a collarbone or have nothing happen to you your whole career. JJ's career is very similar to Denarius McGhee. Both were dynamite as younger players and just got beat up over a 4 year career.

Interesting. Because JJ's ankle was originally injured while scrambling. Apparently the DE that got to him didn't get the memo JJ dictated about where to hit him. 8-) 8-) ;)

What im saying is that you anticipate it coming, and JJs ankle was hurt evading pressure and got hit late and landed awkwardly on it...not on a read option where he kept it and got blasted. So my point remains valid.

You completely nailed this one. I was just thinking the same thing. It's really sad actually but I can see the end of JJ's career playing out eerily similar to DM's. Poised for a deep playoff run and possible shot at the national title - but likely drop games at the end of the season due to playing injured, tough schedule, etc.

Hell is coming faster than a empty fuel tank? JJ plays injured is not news? Hyphen comes in and plays QB, old stuff?

In any event UM's chance of wining is based on our offense and not much else. If our offense finally comes alive for 4 quarters we win by two. Otherwise we have a bad day at black rock's towering inferno! Some call it red yuck!

+1

You take the QB running option out of the zone read, and you make that offense essentially worthless, which is one of the reasons our offense has struggled so much this season. JJ needs to fake the handoff and run the ball in the FIRST SERIES, to show EWU that he will be a threat to run all game long.

I couldn't possibly agree with this more. Options and zone reads are always the most successful when the option is not forced.
