Jeff Choate new MSU Head Coach

I think it's a good hire for the Cats. Reading their board though it sounds like many don't including many players who are tweeting their displeasure over not being told before it was leaked. Leaks happen though...

These soft bozeman pansies are the reason their program is where it is.......cat players, you all SUCK. Really, you all suck... Ash gave you an opportunity to play D1. You all shit your pants. As expected.

cat players are slow, soft, and would be smacked repeatedly in the mouth by any competitive DIII school. You are the reason your coach was fired. Get real. You deserve NOTHING.NOTHING!

I missed this yesterday. Is this seriously the best they could get? Don't get me wrong, the hiring of Coach Jon Choate definitely makes me very happy for several obvious reasons. Is a Choate another term for taint? Or is a Choate an old lady who has one big boob and one little boob? Either way, that program just can't seem to make a good decision. If you were to ask an alien who just landed on Earth which program has a coach named Jon Choate, he would guess Montana State.

The firing of Ash was no big surprise to most followers of the BSC. I thought he did the best job he could do in Bozeman outside of this season of course. For me this story is all about expectations over there. I know the fans think their program should be a perennial powerhouse in the national title race and there lies the problem. MSU is a decent program don't get me wrong but they are more of a team battling to enter the top 25 with an occasional run at the BSC title not the perennial top 10 program a majority of their fan base thinks they are.
I can honestly say I think they were better off with Ash then the hiring of Choate. I'm sure little brother will be banging the drum loudly and proudly for their new savior but I think they are headed right back to annual mediocrity.

Great question! I won't pretend to be an expert, but I've always thought of the choate as sort of a fluid term defined as the air-space created by the back of the scrotum and the front of the taint. I'm very open to correction on this, however.

. . . strong Montana ties
I think he will do really good in Montana recruiting being a native

Choate was born July 15, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio and then graduated from St. Maries (Idaho) High School in 1988 (St. Maries is south of Couer d'Alene; population 2,402 in 2010). He is married to Janet and they have one son, Jory.

Choate earned a B.S. in social sciences from Western Montana in 1993. He has worked on a master's degree.

Coaching Experience (UW bio)
• 2014-15 – Washington – Defensive Line/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2013 – Florida – Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2012 – Washington State – Linebackers
• 2009-2011 – Boise State – Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2006-2008 – Boise State – Running Backs/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2005 – Eastern Illinois – Special Teams Coordinator
• 2003-2004 – Utah State – Safeties/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2002 – Utah State – Graduate Assistant
• 1997-2001 – Post Falls (Idaho) High School – Head Coach
• 1996 – Twin Falls (Idaho) High School – Defensive Coordinator
• 1994-1995 – Challis (Idaho) High School – Head Coach
• 1992-1993 – Montana Western – Linebackers

Not being a smart ass here, but the main take away from his coaching byo is - that he does not last long wherever her goes. Seriously - why would you hire a guy that job hops that much? Furthermore, he has never been a offensive or defensive coordinator at the college level. Now he is a head coach? Not sure this was a good hire. I am not trying to be an ass - just pointing out the obvious.

wait; who was this the Griz hired as HC???? your comment easily applies to him as well, but it turned out OK for you guys. cue Cadillac comments

2002 Washington - Defensive Backs
1999-2001 Washington - Safeties, Special Teams Coord
1998 Colorado - Safeties, Special Teams, Rec Coord
1995-97 Colorado - Outside LBs, Special Teams Coord
1993-94 Northern Arizona - OLB, Spec Teams, Rec Coord
1992 UCLA - Assistant Recruiting Coord
1990-91 UCLA - Graduate Assistant
1989 Montana - Defensive Line
1988-89 Montana - Secondary
1987 Sweet Grass HS (Big Timber, Mont.) - Asst Coach

Good point and post. You certainly can't dismiss the similarities, nor the differences. BH took over a program that was doing well, had good recruits and BH had ties to the program. Deep ties. Don Quixote - not so much. Possibly he surrounds himself with great coaches and does very well because he can lead people. On the surface this pick seems strange to me. Then again, I remember when Rash was hired. I think he was probably the winner by default. Maybe that happened again?

Warning, this post is for those who enjoy talking football and are interested in the Bobcat perspective. Choate was my top choice from the jump. He's a firery guy who is a football guy (i always saw ash as an administrative guy who happened to coach football). He played in Montana, his wife's family I believe is from Montana, he's connected with Montana high school coaches, he recruits Texas, and he's a defensive guy.

Now back to your regularly scheduled middle school bathroom humor....

He actually does seem like a great hire. Doesn't mean we can't have a little fun though...

It's more that MSU is a University with a football team. UM is a football team with a community college.

Dmont, that's not true at all. I know for a fact he is very good friends with several very successful high school football coaches in this state.

He was the recruiting coordinator at UW. He has great connections all over the Northwest, CA. and even Texas. He recruited Dissly out of Bozeman High. He should really help Bobcat recruiting, especially in Washington.

It's more of a club team at MSU. If they ever offer schollies, watch out! Scary good!

I hear Choate has made some connections down under as well.

You're right. At least that's what I learned in bathroom humor class in middle school.

This is as good a hire as MSU can expect. I don't expect much. Preseason top 3 probably, top 5 for sure. It's a rebuilding year after all.

In all seriousness, I think it was a mistake to fire Ash, typical move by an AD who just wants to look busy. For all the grief we gave him here he did pretty well compared to the BSC, and ran it clean. Better to have fired the AD in my opinion.

It's true Choate wasn't MSU's first choice. It's been confirmed. Choate's name was mentioned early in the Griz hiring process last year, but I don't believe he got a final interview. Interesting hire for MSU. I'm sure he will do very well, especially if he wants, or can convince Cramsey to stay and run the offense. I think it's a good hire, but, as with any coaching change, only time will tell. I do think it's a bit premature though for MSU fans to assume the 2016 Cat defense automatically got better today, just because Choate was a defensive assistant. But all, in, all I think it's a good hire. They went with the one candidate who had true Montana ties.

I'm cool with all that you said Hav, except for the last part. Jesus Christ the guy has zero Montana ties, other than he went to Western. Shit...Canadian families who spend their summer here have more "Montana Ties" than this guy.

Ya think? Here...

I think the name is "biff" choate. Says that on his SAMs club membership card. Or am I thinking of someone else?
