Choate was born July 15, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio and then graduated from St. Maries (Idaho) High School in 1988 (St. Maries is south of Couer d'Alene; population 2,402 in 2010). He is married to Janet and they have one son, Jory.

Choate earned a B.S. in social sciences from Western Montana in 1993. He has worked on a master's degree.

Coaching Experience (UW bio)
• 2014-15 – Washington – Defensive Line/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2013 – Florida – Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2012 – Washington State – Linebackers
• 2009-2011 – Boise State – Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2006-2008 – Boise State – Running Backs/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2005 – Eastern Illinois – Special Teams Coordinator
• 2003-2004 – Utah State – Safeties/Special Teams Coordinator
• 2002 – Utah State – Graduate Assistant
• 1997-2001 – Post Falls (Idaho) High School – Head Coach
• 1996 – Twin Falls (Idaho) High School – Defensive Coordinator
• 1994-1995 – Challis (Idaho) High School – Head Coach
• 1992-1993 – Montana Western – Linebackers

Yes not a native but went to college in MT. Has extensive FBS experience, especially on defense. If MSU had only a half way good defense this year, they would probably been undefeated. They scored enough points to beat anyone.

Except for the teams that out scored them, which was quite a few.

Unless I totally misunderstood, he's from Idaho. Not that it discredits him. I'm just saying, his "Montana ties" are a reach. Hasn't been in the state in at least 14 yrs. It's a reach. I am disappointed with the hire. I honestly liked what Ash did for the program. So I honestly hope his firing doesn't go in vain. That said, you're exactly right about Stitt. Feeling around here was pretty neutral and sometimes you need an energy type coach. Something I never saw out of Ash.

If I were a Griz fan I would be happy with what Ash did too. Ash did a great job for the program. However, it was on a downward trend the last three years and he did not win the big games. Choate has ties to Montana even if not a native. He understands what it takes.

Well...congrats to you then. Total outsider looking at it, I think you had a good thing going and to simply fire a guy over his Griz/Cat record seems a little short sided. Then again, that's just me and I'm not 40 games down from being even with the Griz.

Ash was not fired just because of his record against the Griz. There was a downward trend in the last three years in total. He lost all the big games including EWU, and in the playoffs.

Don't kid yourself. If Ash won the Griz-Cat game this year he would still be the head coach.....
The last three years the Cats have been overrated. Nobody's fault........

I disagree. In the games we lost, it was on the defense. Show your stats. We scored enough points in each loss to win.

For all the talk over here of Cat fans obsessing over "big brother."

This is like the 15th Bobcat thread this month.

Maybe Big Brother has Little Brother issues.

That's not a downward trend ( making the playoffs). You criticize the Griz for having glasses at times, same medicine. Look at the last 4-5 yrs. You guys won the last title in what, '12? Made the playoffs in like 10,11,12 and 14. And then look within those teams you played, buzz saws...Sam Houston twice, App, South Dakota and even North Dakota State?! Downtrend ?!
Problem is you guys somehow love to trip over yourselves.
Problem wasn't Ash, its the fans and expectations, unrealistic when you start getting some success.
Yeah, this year sucked. I thought it'd be a tough year for you when you put Kane in as a Coordinator for a few years, just like us with Ty ( sort of). But you all puked on Ash for that. Write it down, I think in 2 yrs you guys miss Ash more than you like Choate. Just my opinion.

Do you really think the Grizfans would accept losses like the Cats did in the playoffs? Would the Griz think their expectations were too high? Go figure!

There you have it. The Wombat view. If we were just an "elite" program and had a first class team, we could have beat anyone ....

No, the long predicted Wombat implosion has occurred. Everyone wants to watch the car wreck.

Yeah, I do because I went through them. Youngstown, UMass, Wofford. There is just 3 quick ones. All 3 at home and they hurt. I got all night kid. Keep fishing. Sooner or later maybe you will actually realize, its Y. O. U.

This probably encapsulates the cat's psychology for the past 25 years better than any statement I have ever read. We're almost good!

Not being a smart ass here, but the main take away from his coaching byo is - that he does not last long wherever her goes. Seriously - why would you hire a guy that job hops that much? Furthermore, he has never been a offensive or defensive coordinator at the college level. Now he is a head coach? Not sure this was a good hire. I am not trying to be an ass - just pointing out the obvious.

Shit. Yeah, sorry, I got nothing for that.

So this guy was a high school head coach 14 years ago. This could very well turn out to be a "Faustian" decision by the cats. By Faustian, I mean the hilarious Gerry Faust hiring by Notre Dame in the early 80s. Poor bobcats. The buffoonery just never seems to end.
