Jeff Choate new MSU Head Coach

Choate appears to be excited and feeling like he is at the highest point in his professional career so far with the opportunity to lead a program. I just hope Fields didn't sell it to him as "the #2 FCS program in the ENTIRE state of Montana."

I've heard athletic directors refer to the football coach as 'the tip of the spear'. This is the first time I've ever heard an AD refer to a newly hired football coach as 'the nose of the clown' before. Way to go, Bozo!

I remember a lot of mixed feelings on here when Stitt was hired. Only time tells. This guy has a good resume and strong Montana ties.
I tend to agree with you. But, the strong Montana ties is at best, a reach.

I think he will do really good in Montana recruiting being a native. He has a very good energetic personality. MSU already has commitments from some the best Montana recruits including Balue Chapman, Gatorade Player of the Year. He will solidify those guys right away.

Unless I totally misunderstood, he's from Idaho. Not that it discredits him. I'm just saying, his "Montana ties" are a reach. Hasn't been in the state in at least 14 yrs. It's a reach. I am disappointed with the hire. I honestly liked what Ash did for the program. So I honestly hope his firing doesn't go in vain. That said, you're exactly right about Stitt. Feeling around here was pretty neutral and sometimes you need an energy type coach. Something I never saw out of Ash.

If I were a Griz fan I would be happy with what Ash did too. Ash did a great job for the program. However, it was on a downward trend the last three years and he did not win the big games. Choate has ties to Montana even if not a native. He understands what it takes.

Well...congrats to you then. Total outsider looking at it, I think you had a good thing going and to simply fire a guy over his Griz/Cat record seems a little short sided. Then again, that's just me and I'm not 40 games down from being even with the Griz.
As far as the downtrend...didn't you guys make the playoffs last year?

The way I read his bio while at Utah State, it hardly seems to me that he is a "Montana Native".

"As a college player at Western Montana he was a starter at linebacker as a freshman before an off-season automobile accident ended his playing career. His head coach was current USU head coach Mick Dennehy.
Choate earned a B.S. in social sciences from Western Montana in 1993. He has worked on a master's degree. Choate was born July 15, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio and then graduated from St. Maries (Idaho) High School in 1988. He is married to Janet and they have one son, Jory. "

Ash was not fired just because of his record against the Griz. There was a downward trend in the last three years in total. He lost all the big games including EWU, and in the playoffs.

WHOOOOOOO????????????????

never heard of him, he's a specials teams coach and DLine coach? that's it? oh boy, watch out !!! hahahaha.

That's not a downward trend ( making the playoffs). You criticize the Griz for having glasses at times, same medicine. Look at the last 4-5 yrs. You guys won the last title in what, '12? Made the playoffs in like 10,11,12 and 14. And then look within those teams you played, buzz saws...Sam Houston twice, App, South Dakota and even North Dakota State?! Downtrend ?!
Problem is you guys somehow love to trip over yourselves.
Problem wasn't Ash, its the fans and expectations, unrealistic when you start getting some success.
Yeah, this year sucked. I thought it'd be a tough year for you when you put Kane in as a Coordinator for a few years, just like us with Ty ( sort of). But you all puked on Ash for that. Write it down, I think in 2 yrs you guys miss Ash more than you like Choate. Just my opinion.

Yes not a native but went to college in MT. Has extensive FBS experience, especially on defense. If MSU had only a half way good defense this year, they would probably been undefeated. They scored enough points to beat anyone.

Not six times , all your losses aren't on the defense. The defense made stops in all your losses , except PSU to give you guys a chance too win.
