Jay And Marty are annoying

Having now rewatched all 4 of our games multiple times this season, I can confidently say that Kohn is by far the worst play-by-play announcer we've ever had, and it's not close.

The guy is terrible at this. It's okay, play-by-play announcing is hard. Clearly not just anyone can walk into the booth and do it well.

But it's absolutely to the point where the quality and reputation of the broadcast is severely hurt by having him in there.

I wasn't all that tuned in to Kohn's repeated exclamations of "touchdown" for things other than touchdowns, at least until it was mentioned on this board. Now, I can't ignore it.

Marty is the freaking GOAT. That coach picks up on every penalty before the call, knows what happening and what isn't on both sides fo the ball and points it out without sounding like a complete douche.

He gives you the probable plays for each situation pre snap and explains why. He's taken to pointing the tendencies of the OC in particular situations, which I think is great. I appreciate those insights.

I don't need a rah, rah, good guys scrore again commentator. I don't need Yahtzee Baby, or the CASE IH redzone, or an commentator who shape shifts into a death metal singer when the teams scores. I hear enough of that from the fans. I don't need a guy who sounds like he belongs on a game show.

Years ago, MSU had a guy, Dean Alexander, who sounded the part. The Dean of Montana broadcasting, but most of what he did was bitch. There was never a fair call against the Bobcats, there was never enough calls on the opponents. Every now and then, I would get a chance to sit among the Bobcats at a game and no matter the sport they bitched just like Dean.

They’re horrible. Marty says the dumbest shit every single game.

And the amount of times they call players the wrong names you would think they’ve never watched this team play before.

Jay is a hard-news broadcaster that was the MTN reporter that provided excellent coverage for the Yellowstone fires 🔥 of 1988, the Tom Judge-Stan Stephens gubnatorial race as well as the John Melcher-Conrad Burns senate race in 1988 plus Montana Centennial of 1989, including the black-tie Centennial Ball in Helena and The Great Montana Cattle Drive from Roundup to Billings. After running the Butte MTN station with his good friend the late Pat Kearney, he moved to Billings and was our evening news anchor along with Julie Shepard Lovell, formerly of KPAX in Missoula, and Janelle Slade and he was excellent for over 25 years !!!

Jay was not a sports reporter or anchor and it shows, but he is a UM J school grad and absolutely loves his alma mater and this is 100 % his dream part-time job !!! He and his wife tragically also lost their adult daughter, also a UM grad and diehard GRIZ, to cancer several years ago, and Jay has commented several times about her cheering on her beloved GRIZ from heaven !!!

So please go easy on Jay--his heart ❤️ is in the right place even if his broadcasting of our games isn't always, and I hope and think he is gradually improving with Marty's help.

We can all appreciate his heart while also recognizing that someone else would be better suited to the job. Most professional jobs require actual competence, and Scripps should be no different.
