James Madison

Ok so one G5 team out of like 50+ teams makes the CFP. So you have to be the absolute best G5 team to make it and there’s zero margin for error. It’s a nearly impossible task to make the CFP as a G5 team. But sure, I guess you have like a 1% chance to compete for a championship when playing in the G5.
What are the chances of a bsc basketball team to play for a national championship?

But I don't hear too many people saying we should move to DII because of that.

I know economics are hard through rose colored glasses, so lets keep this simple...

JMU enrollment is roughly double that of Montana. And that gap will widen.
JMU has an enormous student sports fee that provides funds for their athletic department. Montana cannot match that fee.
JMU is located in a densely populated area with tens of millions more people that the state of Montana has. This opportunity pool is a massive competitive edge.
The amount of money that can be spent on JMU's programs dwarfs Montana's in terms of local donors and alumni donors. Montana will never catch up.

We're not JMU, or App State or 'insert whatever former FCS east coast school that moved up and had any success', and we never will be. There are too many factors working against us to even make this a reasonable comparison.

Our Griz are always going to be a larger fish in a smaller pond. Always. Because the money just isn't there, and it likely never will be.

No we can move up, if:

We get an invite into an existing FBS conference. Something we don't have.
We find a lottery ticket winner who gifts the Univ. tens of millions of dollars. Something we don't have.
The NCAA implodes and everyone can do anything they want. Something we don't have.

In the meantime, James Madison will get some bowl game. Possibly a game that matters, quite possibly one that doesn't. Our Grizzlies have four more games potentially remaining in their season. Possibly leading to a Championship. All things considered, as a fan I find four playoff games (with or without a Championship) is a hell of lot of fun. More fun than a single bowl game.

P.S., Let us know when you win the lottery.

The fact that they’re in the conversation is more the point than the outcome. They are “competing for championships” now at the highest level. It has long been the argument of the most apathetic of boosters and administrators at UM that achieving that level of success at the next level would be impossible, and yet here is JMU breathing truth into the lie.
They are not competing for a championship, only competing to be a bubble team for the playoffs. The “move up” rants on here are silly.

By that logic the Griz have competed for a championship just once in the last 15 years. You can’t win unless you play, and any given Saturday a team can win. But yes, let’s continue to spin our wheels and win 11 games in a row against the little sisters of the poor year after year. When NDSU is gone what will be left in this subdivision? ….. and they are leaving, it’s just a question of when, and the rumor is that it’s soon….

You are wrong in virtually every respect. But, if we move up as claim will happen soon, I will at least save three grand a year by giving up the season tickets I have had since 1994.

That’s fickle. And what did I say that was wrong? The Griz have participated in just one championship game in the last 15 years. We have not by your logic, “competed for a championship” save that one glorious year in 2023. You cannot say that JMU wouldn’t be competing for a championship if they made the CFP and then in the same breath assert that it’s otherwise for the Griz in the FCS playoffs…. That’s called cognitive dissonance

Two G5 teams have made it in just the first two years of the CFPs expanded existence, and both of which are teams UM has had a long history of competing against.

Fortūna audācēs iuvat.

And I thought that our motto was “Superbia et traditio Ursōrum Montanēnsium timidīs aut infirmīs nōn committentur”
I like both of Latin sayings.

This is an interesting take...And by interesting I really mean 'pants on head, window licking retarded'

This team, nor any other team we've ever had, would have been able to realistically compete for a conference championship in any of the top 5 conferences, in any year, let alone a national championship at the FBS level. If you took the absolute best player at every position from Griz history and put them all on the same team, and all of them stayed healthy the entire year, that uber team is probably a 7-5 or 8-4 team in the Big 10, PAC-12 or ACC any given year. The SEC or Big 12? Good fucking luck.

Stop pretending that the Griz have a snowball's chance in hell at being competitive with those teams. Griz fans are still pounding their chests about beating a terrible Washington team a few years ago by putting up 232 total yards.

The real question is where is any of the Montana or Dakota teams moving up to? When the PAC12 imploded and they scooped teams from the Mountain West to rebuild was there any offers from either conference? You don’t just get to say we play in the SEC now and everybody says ok!

Can any of those teams afford to move up? The extra scholarships, the new sports, the increased travel costs...where is all of that supposed to come from?

Defeatism and apathy at its finest… the Griz would be competing in a G5 conference for a shot at the CFP just like the others currently vying for that spot. Yours is the stance that has led the UM down the path that has led to its current state. Apathy, an entrenchment of the status quo, and an unwillingness to take risks; these are the hallmarks of a program spinning its wheels

To assume we'd have the exact same team make-up at the FBS level isn't very realistic...we'd have more scholarships

Let's pretend the university finds a gold mine under the quad to fund those extra scholarships.

Sure, we can now offer more scholarships. Now, let's take a gander at the guys we were already attracting. Are there any linemen who can compete and win at the FBS level? No? Huh, so we're going to be taking the same caliber of linemen that aren't crushing FCS competition to the FBS level?

You go ahead and do the math here, and let me know how many Mountain West conference titles that works out to.
