Jake Wiley--Trackster

As much as I want to see Wiley at WR for the GRIZ, I am thinking there is a good reason it might not happen in the 2014 season. I believe a multi sport scholarship athlete has his scholarship counted against the football scholarship allotment. With the # of WR's we have on the roster and limited scholarships, how much sense would that make for the GRIZ to use a scholarship against football? This year, Wiley's scholarship was against the basketball team.

So if he gets a track scholarship in 2014, he has to stick with track only for it to not count against the football scholarship. I believe this is the main reason we see football scholarship players competing in other sports more often than not.

Maybe someone can add to this, but I think I am close to this being the case.

Hold on there grizruler.....it's starting to look more and more like the the Griz FB staff are trying to circumvent the loss of Griz football schollies by bringing in football players....calling them "track" and/or "basketball" players....letting them run around the track a couple of times...shoot several free throws....and VOILA.....they go out for the football team....keep their scholly..nice little racket the boys have got going. I'll bet the NCAA would like to hear about that 'lil hustle....anyone hear "post season ban"? :mrgreen:

TC, that is exactly why it makes sense for the NCAA to have rules regarding that. I think that is why we won't see Wiley on the football team.

While I understand your point about how a school could manipulate the rules this way, this situation actually occurs with some regularity everywhere. Anytime there is a two-sport athlete, he is generally given financial support in only one of them. But I agree it's an area UM would likely want to tread lightly, and probably an area in which-- if Jake even plays FB -- the NCAA has already been notified by UM Compliance.
