Jake Retzlaff withdraws from BYU - future Griz?

He was originally charged with a sexual crime, but the young lady was talked out of pressing charges. He was then hit with a 7 game suspension for the honor code violation. I don't know if he decided to leave or was told he would not be welcomed back to the team. At any rate, if you want him, go for it. I'm sure that many schools will back off on him.
...the young lady had buyer's remorse after getting caught and had to generate a story...

...sue and settle is common in cases like this...

...suspended 7 games for honor code violation...

...many schools will, in fact, recruit him rigorously...

Same situation - one of them is true.

The one thing that bothers me though is he gave the girl money in a civil suit and made the alleged victim go away so if the DA or whoever was going to prosecute, now they have no victim and thus no case. Jordan could have do this too if he had the money, but he didn't walk away from the fight and was acquitted in a court of law.
I don't know if Retzlaff did anything or not, and I am under no mind to believe he would want to come to Missoula. No one here can say he did or did not do anything illegal, you weren't there but based on the results we have of his case, I wouldn't want him on our team.
I can't find anywhere where it says he gave the plaintiff (girl) money in the civil suit. From what I have found, it was a joint dismissal with prejudice. So for all we know, the the plaintiff and defendant came to an joint decision to end the civil case.

Good detective.

i thought the school has to process the portal request? from the article: BYU could have granted Retzlaff a release, allowing him to enter the portal and pursue a more traditional transfer route. Instead, the school withheld that release, leaving withdrawal as his only option.

Transfer portal was open from Dec. 4 to Jan. 2 and again from April 15 to 30 and again, this year only, from July 7 to August 5. The only athletes permitted to transfer from July 7 to August 5 will be those who have been placed on the "Designated Student Athletes" list as part of the approved House settlement.

A major provision of the recently approved House settlement, which went into effect on Tuesday, players who were on a roster in 2024-25 but were set to lose that spot under the new roster limits (in the case of football, 105 players) can be grandfathered in as DSAs.

Therefore, he wouldn't be able to enter the transfer portal this year.

Very true, for all we know. It could have reached a settlement that was undisclosed as well, which happens often in civil cases.

What I read on this is that he is trying to pull a fast one on the portal. He is withdrawing from BYU, I'm sure at the advice of his attorney, and then he is going to transfer into the new school to avoid the suspension. I didn't read the whole thing, it came up on the headlines on MSN when I logged in the other day and I normally don't open those, but I gave it a glance.

"In a legal response to the lawsuit that was filed Friday, Retzlaff admitted to knowing the woman, identified as Jane Doe, and having sexual relations with her. Premarital sex is considered to be a violation of the honor code and would warrant a suspension."

Mormon version of Sharia Law.

Meh.

It's the equivalent of the rule prohibiting smoking weed in Miller Hall.

A few get caught and sanctioned...everyone else gets high.

Great comparison!

I find it hard to commiserate with him on this because no one forced him to go to BYU, he signed up to follow their rules voluntarily when he enrolled. When we come to his draft day, if he slides below his projections, then we'll know if there was more to this than what we are being told. Make no mistake about it, he's worried about protecting his status there by everything he is doing now.

You'll never win the Lottery if you don't play, right?
I simply asked him to consider the Griz.
He may have 50 Power schools trying to get him, but maybe he'll remember the Griz for getting out front and trying.
He's an academic Senior in 'Exercise Science.' Should have two years eligibility.

"After a lot of prayer, reflection and conversation with those I trust, I've made the decision to officially withdraw from BYU and step away from the football program. BYU has meant more to me than just football. It has been a place of growth - spiritually, mentally, and physically. ... The relationships and memories I've made in Provo will always be part of me. That said, I'm excited to turn the page and embrace the next chapter. My journey is far from over ... ."

It was signed, "Jake Retzlaff, BYJew.""
Yep, he's not Mormon, he's Jewish, and has an obvious sense of humor! :ROFLMAO:

I can tell you he don't know Jack!

Okay, I did some further review here and maybe someone else said this, I didn't read all 37 previous posts...
I'm not going as far as to say the girl is a nut job, however. Their stories pretty much corroborated up to a point where she claims that he was a childhood friend and his admission that he had just met her that day.
It's hard to hear these stories over and over again with like some of the ones referenced here so far. As I said before, I sided with Jordan Johnson all along because his story was so consistent, but it is hard to hear about it on the news and not think for just a moment, 'what if that was my daughter?'

At KSL.com:

PROVO — Jake Retzlaff has broken his silence.

The rising fifth-year senior quarterback at BYU filed a response Friday to a civil lawsuit by a Salt Lake woman who accused Retzlaff of sexual assault last month in Utah's 3rd District Court.

In the response, Retzlaff, through his attorney, requested that "the complaint be dismissed, that the plaintiff AG take nothing, and that Mr. Retzlaff is fully reimbursed for his fees and costs incurred to defend against this meritless case," according to the 14-page filing obtained by KSL.

Retzlaff "denies each and every allegation contained" in the original complaint, including that he "bit, raped or strangled (the accuser)" after she drove from a residence near the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City to his apartment in Provo.

"Instead, Mr. Retzlaff and (the accuser) had a pleasant and entirely consensual evening together," the response read, "playing video games, and a normal evening of consensual sexual interaction that was uneventful but pleasant, with the plaintiff sleeping over and leaving the next morning to return to Salt Lake City."

A spokesperson for BYU athletics referred all questions back to the university's initial statement at the time of the lawsuit.

Retzlaff also noted in the response that the plaintiff reached out to him via social media and/or text messaging "to initiate interaction between herself and Mr. Retzlaff on or about October 2023." A month later, he alleged that the two engaged in a "consensual sleepover," which later led to "very comfortable texting" and "flirty text exchanges with each other about the BYU/Utah football rivalry."

Those text conversations included no mentions of their previous encounter being unpleasant, according to Retzlaff.

The response also notes that the encounter occurred when Retzlaff "was not publicly identified as an NFL draft prospect" following BYU's 5-7 season in 2023. It was filed in May, when "the plaintiff AG hired a Salt Lake City lawyer and made her first ever claim of rape linked to a large monetary demand from Mr. Retzlaff" following the Cougars' 11-2 season in 2024.

Retzlaff alleged that the plaintiff and he had no contact — "not even by text" — during the 2024 season.

Among a list of "other defenses" in the response, Retzlaff alleged that the accuser "had sex with one or more Utah football players," and then reported to Provo police "four or five days later" that "she was assaulted by a 'childhood' friend from Salt Lake City."

The response filing claimed the lawsuit against Retzlaff indicated an attempt to "extort money from him and that whichever Utah football player was a childhood friend of hers, who she did identify to the police as her assailant, must either be a benchwarmer, or even if a starter for Utah, is not a viable target for payment, and is not an NFL draft prospect."

I'm pretty sure I heard that term first on a BYU game.
What's the over and under on the number of games Jim McMahon would have missed if they called him up on a violation of the code? Or, if its easier, the number he would have been allowed to play in.
If I were a betting man, I would have money on him going to Tennessee. West Virginia and Oklahoma State are possibilities.
Tennessee makes the most sense though with their quarterback situation.
