[Ivies have allowed only undergrads to play. Seniors who had an extra year of eligibility due to injury or whatever, have had to avoid graduation senior spring to be able to play one more season in fall.]

Ivy allows seniors to play as grads

The Ivy League will allow current senior athletes to play sports as full-time grad students at their current university next year in a break with longstanding policies.

The change is a result of COVID-19, which canceled a full year of sports. Athletes must stay at the schools they are currently at to receive this exemption and must be admitted at the grad schools through regular channels, the league confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday.

“In granting this waiver, the presidents acknowledge the unique impact of the pandemic during the current academic year across all three sport seasons for those students in their final year of Ivy League eligibility. This change is a direct result of the pandemic and will not be available in future years,” the league wrote to senior athletes in an email obtained by the AP.

The Ivy League has had a policy that only permitted undergraduate students to compete on athletic teams. Even when the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to all athletes in October because of the coronavirus, Ivy League competitors would have had to transfer to schools outside the conference to get their grad year."

More Ivy presidents BS. Again, no Ivy sports for the full school year.

"Before Joe Tsai co-founded Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., made billions and bought the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, he played lacrosse at Yale in the 1980s. His devotion to the sport grew along with his net worth, and recently he brought the two together in the form of an unusual offer.

Tsai offered to pay several million dollars for the Ivy League to build a sequestered “bubble” that would allow its men’s and women’s lacrosse teams to compete again during the pandemic. Ivy League conference presidents rebuffed the proposal almost immediately
, conference executive director Robin Harris said.

Tsai went a step further. With the help of Mike Rabil, a Dartmouth football alum and co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League, in which he is a major investor, Tsai drew up plans for a three-week, single-site bubbled tournament for the Ivy League’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, according to people familiar with his plans.
He pitched the concept to Yale athletic director Vicky Chun and Harris in late January and offered to foot the bill, estimated to exceed five million dollars by a person familiar with the effort.

Harris said she was bullish on the idea, but she defers to Ivy presidents on operational matters. She would not comment on why the offer was rebuffed in less than a week,

Of the 357 Division I men’s basketball teams, 347 are playing; the Ivy League represents eight of the 10 universities to opt out."

"Ivy League cancels spring sports conference season again"

The Ivy presidents are killing Ivy sports.

“The public health measures now in effect at all Ivy League universities have been carefully designed to support our teaching and research missions while keeping our students, faculty, staff and neighboring communities safe,” the presidents said. “In the Ivy League, these measures must apply equally to our athletics programs along with other academic and co-curricular activities.”

While there won’t be any league competitions or championships, the presidents would allow the eight schools to participate in local non-conference games that are within 40 miles if the coronavirus pandemic greatly improves.

[I assume it would be too good to be true that they could have a bunch of home non-conference games with schools who are playing in the spring.]

There are five phases the league has set and schools would have to meet the standards to be eligible to compete. How schools progress through those phases are determined by campus and state health policies.

No school has reached the third phase yet. Most of the eight schools don’t even have all their spring athletes on campus.

“As campus and community leaders, we believe that our public health responsibilities and educational principles preclude us from sponsoring Ivy League athletics competition this spring,” the presidents wrote. “We regret the many sacrifices that have been required in response to the pandemic, and we appreciate the resilience of our student-athletes, coaches and staff in the face of adversity during this difficult and unusual year.”
