It's football season

But I want some Basketball info! Anyone have anything about the team? Specifically the new guys? I am really interested to see how Coleman pans out. I think he has the potential to be an Art Steward type player but with more size and, because of that, possibly be even better than Art was. Hoping he can put on about ten more pounds of muscle to help bang down low when need be. The more I read about him the more I am excited to see what he adds to the team this season! Can't wait for some ball!

it'd be great if the basketball program had a shill, a local deepthroat, a la brint wahlberg on the football board, to report on scrimmages, trade gossip, update recruiting. it'd be nice if someone within the basketball program came on here under an assumed name to perform this function, or at the very least give us an updated roster. here we are, seven weeks or so from the start of practise, and we're still showing a roster from five months ago. i'm a huge wayne tinkle fan, but it seems the montana basketball program is forfeiting one of the key aspects of any sports program, college or pro--public relations. doesn't tinks have the contacts, within or outside the program, to improve this?

just look at the two boards. the football board hums twelve months a year. the basketball board goes into hibernation from march to october. remember, there are no uninteresting things in life, only uninterested people. basketball at montana is a sleeping giant. it just needs somebody to rouse it. and in my opinion, it starts at the top.

I so miss being back home, going to scrums, open gyms, and swinging by Dahlberg to talk GRIZ basketball with Wayne. He is actually quite open in talking about the team, with fans. I really want to know how the newbies are looking, and see what our new bigs will bring? One of my buddies seen Jordan Gregory over the summer playing pick up ball. He told me, Jordan could not miss and had put on some muscle.

It be nice to see what Cherry, and Jamar worked on over the summer. I am hoping, he worked on ball distribution, handling the rock, and more consistent perimeter game. Jamar, does the guy have a weakness? He is as well rounded as a coach can ask for. Maybe some ball handling, and defensive footwork.

I am hoping Henderson just worked on his overall game. He contributed as a FR on athleticism a lone. If his game develops to his athleticism, look out for this guy! I am hoping he just fed off Will, and Jamar all summer.

I am guessing Mathias Ward has worked on footwork, defense, and expanded his offense everywhere.
He will be a tough matchup this season.

Deshields, finding consistency in finishing off a play. He looked good last year, taking the ball to the hole, but struggled to finish. If that a lone improves, he will help this year.

Weisner really needed to hit the weights, defense, and ball handling. My hope is he develops as a well rounded SF, a better version of Matt Dlouhy.

Any updates would be appreciated. Again, you can find the guys running pick up games almost any evening in the aux gyms, now and again, the main floor. :thumb:

I'd love to be able to get into GRIZ basketball. But living out of town and lack of games on tv and weekend games it's hard to get into a team you can't ever watch play.

All the Big Sky games have been on Bigskytv the last 3 years. This last year, it was damn good, too. :thumb:

I know a kid that attended the overnight camp this summer. I got a report from him the week after he got back. I didn't share it at the time because it was second-hand information and someone else had alot of the same observations on the thread we had at the time. But, in an interest to further the much needed basketball conversation I will share what I recall. Like I said this is second-hand stuff I got weeks ago from a soon to be jr. in high school who watched the guys play, so take it for what it is...

The returning studs: Kid says that Will, Reem and Mathias all looked very good and played as well as you would expect out of them. They are older and pretty dang good so I would think it will be hard to see any improvements until the season begins.

The returning bench guys: Source says that of the guys that seen action last year. Deshields and Gregory looked like they improved the most. Keron was finishing better and Gregory looked very comfortable and was shooting good.

The new guys: These guys were the ones I asked the most about, because I was most curious about them. He said Kovacevic (sp?) looked like a typical euro big guy really skilled but not overly physical, but he liked what he seen. Emerson played very good and had a very well rounded game, he thinks he can push for playing time this year. Coleman seemed a little up and down. Looked really good one day but the next he would just kind of be a no-show. That could be just trying to find his place. "Wiley is a freak" I believe was the exact quote, says if his skills ever match his athleticism he will be absolutely unstoppable. Martin has good potential but like we have talked about, he needs to bulk up and get used to playing other strong, tall dudes.

Like I said, don't quote me on this stuff. Just thought it would be fun to share.

One thing that might help, just a bit is to have a schedule in advance so those of us out of state and free to travel can plan ahead. As it is, we still do not have a fixed schedule while football is often years ahead. I think UM has high interest in bball but the drama this year around the football team is really something to behold. On the other hand, maybe it is a good thing UM basketball is not widely touted, especially this year, as it might be easier for the Griz to travel under the radar as opposed to the football team that has a target on its back with every appearance. UM is the class of the Big Sky with Weber, no doubt, but nationally, not so much. The Griz might be the dark horse surprise this year, so..shhhhhhhhh!

Thanks for the info, temp. I like what I am hearing, for sure. I think this may be one of the first times I have been way more excited for basketball season to start than football. Can't wait to get underway! BTW, it would probably be good for everyone who has complaints about lack of info/scheduling to e-mail Wayne and Gee (for now) to see if you can get the ball rolling and make them aware that this is holding the program back in this age of instant access/gratifacation.

there is a difference between instant gratification and planning for a basketball trip 4 or 5 months from now. I am sure UM is having scheduling problems..but school has already started and still no final word? That has not always been the case.

Please tell me that you did not pass English 101 at UM. I cringe every time you use the word "seen" incorrectly. Tell mtgrizrule too.

Ehh, that's ok. mtgrizrule and I both cringed when we seen you had posted on this thread.

I don't know if this is Montana's issue, but Idaho State is still holding both its men's and women's schedules because their coaches are still both trying to make changes in them. (The women, for example, have conference games scheduled during finals and their coach is trying to get that changed.)

I watched a night scrimmage during the overnight camp and "seen" about what temp reported. That's pretty accurate. Willey jumped out literally with athleticism; returning guys looked good and DeShields/Gregory impressed me more than Henderson. Coleman didn't shoot it well that one night but does have more size than Steward and looks to have more scoring potential....although Steward was pretty quiet in getting his points and contributing in lots of other ways. Coleman may have to realize he's got to become a role player with the guys we have coming back. Bigger guys were hard to peg.
