It's bball Season

Why is Montana's bball attendance so pathetic? I think there are more people posting on the fball forum in late January than show up to see a damn good program at Dahlberg....

I have money on you guys tonight so you better cover.

Not sure what Pac 10/12/1,897 wins have to do with this post.

But some reasons BB attendance has been down:

1. HORRIBLE scheduling by the BSC offices (UM had two home games in the month of January. Now they have one home game in the next month). Very difficult to develop a following when there's nothing to follow.

2. HORRIBLE weather. The two home games UM did have, the streets were damn near impassable. It's remarkable to me that nearly 4,000 people showed up for the Saturday game last week. Even Thursday's attendance was GREAT given the weather. I wouldn't have been surprised if less than 1,000 showed up after seeing the snow levels in and around Missoula.

3. No students. UM didn't get students back on campus until yesterday. Now those students get the opportunity to watch the Griz play in Missoula exactly ONCE over the next month.

4. Another deep playoff run. I know other programs in the BSC don't get this, but when you're still drawing 26,000 people to football games into LATE December, the BB season is already 10 or 11 games in. Again, it's difficult to attract a BB following when the FB team is so successful.

5. UM's attendance is 2nd in the conference. By a WIDE margin. And we have yet to play any games that really get fans interested: msu, weeeeebs, etc.

I would call all of your reasons "short term" explanations (as they all occurred or will occur within months). I think the real reasons occured many years ago. BB used to be bigger than FB in MSLA, but some changes occured that allowed FB to take over.

because basketball is stupid and loses everyone's interest after their 8 year old child moves up and starts getting dominated in the higher levels coupled with the ticky tacky way that fouls are called. Make it more watchable and more people will go. Sorry if I stepped on any of your toes and you just love basketball butI'm one of those super mega ultra gay wrestling guys so....guess I'll have a cosmo instead of going to watch basketball

I wish I could attend. But working at Malmstrom AFB doesn't allow for trips to missoula on any days but weekends. Slight difference than football, timing...

Called winning - consistently. When I was in Jr. High and High school you could not get a ticket to a Men's BBall game and they were a fun time. I remember a when a kid I grew up with was playing for the Griz (Gary Kane), I came to Missoula to watch a game, it almost took an act of God to get in to see him.

So we're 1st in football attendance, 2nd in basketball attendance, and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess we're 1st in women's ball attendance. So yes, pathetic is a word I would use to describe 12 other Big Sky programs before us...

Wait, just noticed his Pac-10 crap. I guess I can understand trolling our board since your own (that a Griz fan gave you out of charity) is a ghost town

Don't be surprised if his response includes the phrase "lady ball."

Ghost town? the Weber hoops forum has been twice as active as egriz's basketball forum has been, even before the hoops season started.

And UM is only out averaging MOntana State by about 410 people, not exactly a wide margin

Team- home games- total- average

Eastern Washington 7- 14228 2033
Idaho State 8- 17213 2152
Montana 11- 33650 3059
Montana State 9- 23842 2649
Northern Arizona 7- 3655 522
Northern Colorado 9- 14626 1625
Portland State 7- 4946 707
Sacramento State 9- 4910 546
Weber State 11- 70995 6454

Attendance average will only improve. the last 5 home games are when the students are back. the last 2 games are against MSU and WSU which will be the highest attended games of the year and are the primary rivals for the Griz. I expected attendance average to increase quite a bit, much of it based on the last 2 games.

Except in the usual Eastern powerhouses, attendance at College basketball games is down for the 4th consecutive year. Frankly, I think there is over exposure on tv..sort of a bball fatigue...

The college basketball game was ruined when the NBA started allowing the best high school kids to sign without going to college. Today's college game is missing the best 30-40 players in the country, who have either signed with the NBA out of high school, or have signed after only one year of college, before the public even knows who they are! Travesty for sure.
