It Could Be Worse … WAY Worse

Not directly FCS … but hang with me for a sec. The Tennessee situation is most likely the most bizarre, and ugliest we’ve seen in a long time. Some words that we’ve read/heard with regard to the situation: “debacle,” ”fiasco,” “full scramble mode,” “nuclear option,” “digital mob rule,” and worse.

The connection to the UM comes from this: Tennessee alumni and fans are saying they need to “bring in a Tennessee guy,” “quit giving us guys who don’t know Tennessee,” “we want a coach who has a feel for the Tennessee traditionals,” “the coach needs to bleed Tennessee orange” …

Does any of that sound familiar? Not saying it’s wrong, or unrealistic … but there it is. Of course, so far some guys with Tennessee “roots,” have already said “Thanks, but no thanks.” They know just exactly what they’d be getting into … and want no part of it.

BTW, the “smart money” figures Schiano will definitely sue Tennessee … unless they reach a pretty big money settlement. Of course, UT might decide to throw their AD under the bus. As I understand it, Schiano and the AD both signed a “memorandum of agreement” for some big money (millions per year). But the story blew up -- “digital mob rule” -- before any UT higher-up had a chance to sign off. But even if those higher-ups repudiate their AD, Schiano probably has grounds to kick their butts anyway.

#1. Why the hell would anyone want to be an AD in this day and age?
#2. Schiano is going to make a lot of money for doing nothing. Reputational damage will be included in the lawsuit if it gets to that point.
#3. Maybe Payton will take the job. He is about the only one the fan base would not crucify for losing and he is a Tennessee guy. Ha!

I hope he does. College football is not for the timid and meek.

Good post. There definitely appear to be similarities among the two situations, the fanbases, and the programs.

They now have 3 more already on radar....names are known. This after 1st choice went to Florida, Second was it...until outrage. But already 3 new named targets. This in span of 4 days. Ex Griz asst. Is one, but my money is on Gundey getting it.....update already, Gundy said no after meeting so another name now surfaced

I do not know the culture around Knoxville. Is it anything like Missoula? The biggest hurdle for UM going forward (athletically AND as a whole) is getting people to buy into the University. There is a distinct lack of school pride in Missoula (especially compared to Bozeman). Is that the same in Tenn?

If not, I would say that is a big difference. There is a large group of people in Missoula (USUALLY but not always fairly left-leaning) who really don't like the Griz, and don't provide much support to the U as well.

If you cave to that left wing PC shit you might just as well close the doors. One of the cable sports shows stated that no established big time coach would touch UT now. Big time FU. Now they gamble with a unknown. Announce Bobby and be done with it. Anything less is just a big gamble. Wanna flush your career, Haslam?

What the hell are you talking about? There’s Griz stuff literally plastered everywhere in town. First thing you see when driving in from the east is the damn school. There’s maroon everywhere. It’s Griz this, Griz that, and I love it. And did you not go to the UW game at all? I saw Griz fans everywhere in Seattle. First bar you notice coming into Missoula is the Press Box in a maroon and silver building.

One last thing, but what the hell does that “left-leaning” not have to do with anything?

Are you really trying to say the Griz have worse fan support and community buy-in than Bozeman for Montana State? Horseshit.

Oh my god Tennessee is going to eat a horse dong without a bun on this. Caving to snowflakes is going to do what it should, cost you millions and set you back years. They’re so effed it’s hilarious.

To be fair to UT fans, would UM want to hire a coach who, in one way or the other (& however minimal or unproven it was), had ties to the Penn St scandal? Especially after our own "scandals"? UT was sued for creating a culture of sexual assault a year and a half ago. The new AD wasn't thinking and may lose his job over this (he actually was thinking that he needed to do whatever the big boosters, aka the Haslems, wanted). Jimmy Haslem, the owner of the Browns, is a big fan of Schiano...that is all you need to know (also sounds familiar to our current situation). I think its pretty amazing that a fan base was actually listened to...kind of gives you some hope. But to the original point, as both a Griz and Vols fan, the similarities of the coaching searches are pretty un-canny.

The point is that Shiano had no ties to the Penn St scandal. He isn't mentioned in the Freech investigative report done for PSU. He wasn't among the 400 witnesses interviewed in the investigation. That "whistleblower" grad asst McCleary, when suing PSU for being blackballed, mentioned in a deposition that his AD at PSU (Bradley) had said that some young coach, years ago, had said he had seen something. McCleary and the young coach missed each other at PSU by 5 or so years, and didn't know each other. Bradley and Shiano both denied ever having that conversation or seeing or knowing anything.

My guess is that McCleary was either mistaken or lied. He may have been trying to bolster his whistle blower case. He won that case by the way, but it's will probably be on appeal for a long time. No one in football or even at little non-football jobs, will hire the guy. My guess is that he is probably bad news, but I don't know.

Jeez, everyone who ever coached at PSU, or walked into the athletic department when Sandusky was there, can't and shouldn't be tainted for life. The Twitter Mob should not be listened to, especially when they have no facts.

After the character assassination that is happening, we can get Greg here. I’d take him in a heartbeat. No second thought about it.

Interesting news. Seems like a clear indicator to me that the Chris Peterson thing isn’t really a thing after all. Will this work CDA?

Weird. After everything we've heard out of the Tennessee "world," neither of these guys make any sense at all. Neither has the slightly vestige of a connection to UT. Or has everybody with a credible football coaching record and a solid connection to Tennessee already turned them down flat?
