ISU to get a new Ball arena

Well, maybe. They're still three or four donors away from gittin' 'er done. And then it's only a 4000 seat arena. Jeez, maybe they could just transport the Helena High Gym down there. They could even leave the Bengal Tiger on the wall.

Good for ISU. Now to get the likes of PSU, Sac State, EWU, and UNC to get better basketball facilities. Then again, basketball does not generate the revenue to even justify new facilities at most of the Big Sky schools. What in the hell are we doing in this conference still?

I don't see the seating capacity as an issue. There is no reason to build it larger than necessary and an upgraded facility would be a huge plus. You probably had issue with Gonzaga deciding to build only a 6000 seat facility.

I did. Also with Wash-Griz adding only a partial second deck, not a full. Costs have skyrocketed since then.

PSU is in the process of remodeling its basketball arena. It'll seat about 4,700.

They will both be smaller than Centrum Arena at Southern Utah, but if they follow Centrum's model both arenas will be nice additions to the otherwise sorry state of arenas in the Big Sky

Yep. They should have built the extra 2,000 seats on the second deck as they originally planned to.

The decision to lop off the additional 2,000 east side seats after they'd already been approved was strictly on Dennison and his short-sighted supply and demand philosophy...as for ISU and $20 million to provide a paltry 4,000 seats consider that the original Adams Fieldhouse, built more than six decades ago, cost $800,000. The passing of time is nothing if not expensive. As for Wa-Griz, Dennison's dawdling will add unnecessary big time cost to the next 2,000 seats. The Empire Builder blew that one... :coffee:

Well first of all, it's a long way from a done deal -- about $20 million or so away. But it would be a huge step forward for a program that has to fight for practice space, can't get into Holt Arena until football is over, and typically has to play three or four games a year in Reed Gym because Holt Arena has been occupied by the Potato Expo, state wrestling tournament or Simplot Games.

As to the capacity, ISU is like most Big Sky schools -- attendance at men's basketball games has consistently gone down over the years. Last year, they averaged 1,800 fans. They haven't had four thousand fans at a game in probably two decades. So size really does not matter as much as giving both the men's and women's teams guaranteed access to practice times, a (hopefully) warmer and cleaner experience for fans, and a better recruiting tool than what we currently have.

PS--I stand corrected -- ISU drew 4,300 for BYU in 2008, their largest crowd since a game with Weber State in 1997. ISU also hosted Utah and Utah State in 2008, and I don't believe either one drew 4,000. And none of those three teams is coming back to Pocatello in the foreseeable future.

The cost of the Adams in today's money would be close to 10 to 12 million. And, with today's attendance trends, Dennison may not have been that short sighted.

Your final sentence perfectly sums up what's wrong with bsc BB. And it's sad. Those teams should be playing in Pokey every third year, minimum.

And the decision not to add the additional seats in WaGriz was a huge mistake. Perhaps they wouldn't be full every game, but I'm willing to bet those seats would be sold for damn near every game. One of the only problems with football in WaGriz is that the average fan or family wanting to go to one or two games a year cannot get tickets. Those seats would have been prime for that.
