I watched this game on Altitude, which GRIZ are on next Sunday. Here are my impressions of each team.
ISU- (1) Zone defense is tough. (2) Man defense is average at best
(3) very questionable depth (4) Keep Stucci (sp?) from killing you. He appeared to me as the biggest key to their offense. When PSU slowed him down, ISU had troubles finding others to step up. Other than Stucci no other player showed me anything beyond average for this conference.
PSU- (1) Solid nucleus going 7 deep. (2) Morrison is solid, and needs to be kept off the boards. (3) The point guard, Dominguez is a good penetrator, drive and dish player. He also has a nice array of dipsy doo shots that seem to find the hole. He is very effective against man defenses. His perimeter game looks shaky though. I do not see how is 3% is over 40%. (4) They play zone and man equally effective, but in zone do have holes. If a team is patient, they will give up plenty of open looks from 3. (5) Get their bigs in foul trouble, beyond Morrison I was not impressed with their bigs at all as for rebounding and defense. However, Alex Tiefenthaler has a real nice range and shot from 3. I am surprised they do not utilize him more often. (6) Huff is a solid well rounded player. Keep him from penetrating, I would take my chances early and give him room from 3. He is inconsistent from 3 thus far this year.
Based on this game, I will be surprised if ISU is still in the running for the title by seasons end. However, PSU should be near the top of the standing. Keys to beating them are controlling Morrison, taking care of the ball, and shutting down the lane to Dominguez and Huff. They have alot of nice parts though, and their defense is very consistent.
