Vijay Singh was one of the first to come out and say that he would rather hit the ball 310 in the rough and wedge to a green, than split the fairway and have a 5 iron.

Wouldn't you? I mean, if one has that option, more power to him. I'd rather block a guy's shot than wait for him to miss, box someone out, and get the board. Shoudn't be my problem if people who cannot block shots complain that I don't even have to be good at boxing out. (I have never blocked a shot in my life)

I am not disagreeing with Vijay, he is right, most of the time. I also think his desire to pound it off the tee may have also led to some poor mechanics on his part, meaning when he wanted to hit fairways, he had a tough time.

As for blocking shots, have blocked several, and it is a great feeling when the opponent knows you got inside his head.

But do you think that it diminishes the game of golf if someone is gifted enough to employ such a strategy?

Not really. The game evolves. I think there are horse for courses, and then there is Tiger Woods. There have been attempts to "Tiger Proof" courses, and that is an exercise in futility because there is nothing that man cannot do with a golf ball.

I agree GB1 - at the outing I went to, there were 3 other pros hitting different shots, who had all won multiple times on tour. However, when Tiger hit it, it just sounded different. Almost like the Harlem Globetrotters v. Washington Generals. Didn't matter whether it was a wedge or a driver. He is at a level all by himself.
