Is Stanford freshman QB transferring to Montana?

With word that Montana starting quarterback Jordan Johnson has been suspended indefinitely after being charged with rape, it makes sense that Griz coach Mick Delaney pursue another prospect to go with the three on his active roster.

More than one blog site has mentioned Stanford freshman Dallas Lloyd as a potential transfer. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound signal caller from Utah has spend the better part of the last two years on an LDS mission in Chile.

Delaney declined to comment on Lloyd when asked Wednesday. Calls to Lloyd’s parents and to the Stanford athletic dept. went unreturned.

Dale Sampson, Lloyd’s high school coach at Pleasant Grove, Utah, believes that his former field general would be a great fit for Montana’s offense. He calls Lloyd a playmaker with a unique knack for making things happen with his scrambling ability. He also showed himself to be an accurate, strong-armed passer in high school.

One challenge for Lloyd will be getting back in playing shape since he hasn’t taken the field since 2010. Plus he has never taken a college snap, so he does not appear to be the quick fix Montana needs.

The odds-on favorite to step in as starter at this point is Shay Smithwick-Hann of Kalispell. The 6-4 redshirt sophomore threw three passes in a reserve role last season.

“This will be his third year with the program,” Delaney noted. “He’s an intelligent young man who understands the offense and has the insight to know exactly what we’re doing.”

Smithwick-Hann, 21, will try to recapture the magic of his high school days when he threw for 1,900 yards and rushed for 722 as a senior at Glacier High. In the process, the business major will try to stay healthy because if not Montana will be forced to depend on a newcomer.

The other two quarterbacks on Montana’s active roster are redshirt freshman Trent McKinney and true freshman Brady Gustafson. Another passer rumored to be looking at Montana is Stanford redshirt junior Robbie Picazo, who has thrown just three passes in his college career.

My question is, are the rumors this article is based off of actual rumors, or just egriz rumors, because we all know about the validity of some (most?) egriz rumors...

Speltz cranking up the transfer rumors - hopefully TheTruth on here goes after him, lol.

I bet the rumors he posts on are just made on behlaf of what's read on here though. The lack of any response from anyone official makes you wonder though if something is up.

Reason enough as to why Lloyd won't be the answer even if he DOES, by some miracle, come to Montana.

When Speltz wrote "more than one blog site" I got to wondering. I've seen the Lloyd rumors mentioned on the Cat/Griz Insider blog, which I suspect used the egriz rumors as its "source". A quick google search revealed one other mention on the Saturday Blitz blog, which appeared to just rehash the Cat/Griz insider information. I'd be more inclined to believe these rumors if they were coming from multiple, credible sources.

I know there's a massive hard-on here for hating on the paper, but the fact is most of their work is good and they're not reporting rumor as fact, they just put it out there and reported the responses from the school. That's all. I would tend to agree that the most interesting part of the story was the lack of official response. It begs for a follow up, and I would expect one, either up or down on his becoming a Griz.

I agree...

Seeing as his facebook page has Standford plastered all over it, every interview I have read indicated Standford. I don't think I would count on it changing.

Speltz should probably go look at Lloyd's facebook page, he just posted his Stanford football picture 2 weeks ago, Stanford's current roster also lists him (not sure how up to date that is though). I doubt a transfer is coming this close to opening week for you guys as most FBS schools start practice today, i'm sure a quick visit to the Stanford message boards to find out who was in camp and who wasn't will be able to answer most of the questions.

Looking forward to seeing the Griz come to Cheney this year, always fun because the Griz bring so many fans and it is always the most entertaining game of the year. Regardless of who your QB is i'm sure the Griz will be tough as always. The Griz have always had a great program and as much as we want to beat you every year on the field, all of us want whats best for the program, the students (athletics and non) and school off the field. Hopefully you (and I'm sure you will) will recover from all the offseason issues and continue to be a huge part of the big skys success.

This is assuming the Missoulian sports dept. puts effort into their coverage. :?

I think the Missoulian sports dept. does an excellent job on their coverage

Don't know how reliable this is, but we do at least know that somebody out there doesn't know the difference between UM and MSU:

Edit: Without divulging too much private info, looking at what we mods can see, it does look like it's probably somebody quite close to the family that posted that on Bobcatnation.com ... just in case the pimping of the little brother wasn't evidence enough.

Thank God, we can put an end to this charade

I agree that the Missoulian's sports section is pretty good. If you want to see what a bad sporting section looks like take a gander at the Idaho Statesman for a comparison.

According to the NCAA rules coaches cannot discuss transfers until practice starts and the player is enrolled in school. Nothing definitive will be said until that happens. Transfers can make their own announcements to the press and to whoever they want to and usually do. This situation is very unique and, if there is a transfer coming, who it is is a better kept secret than the pentagon keeps.

Boy do you have the wrong school! The "Other" school needs a QB. Your son would never start at MSU. Too much talent in front of him!

Sorry as I am sure you would love to have Dallas there. He runs a 4.51, has a 38 inch verticle, benches 320 and can throw it 52 yards on his knees when he was measured.

The ability to throw it 52 yards on his knees would come in handy at MSU.

Dallas's dad sez "nope, not coming to the Griz."
