Is Robin Selvig as smart as you think he is?

I witnessed the Lady Griz working on breaking the press in practice last week. They handled it well in practice but they had no way to simulate the athletes that Pitt had. Selvig prepared them for it but they were just too athletic and our girls couldn't handle it. Selvig looked very frustrated during the game, IMO it was because he knew what to do but our girls simply couldn't do it.

that is the most accurate thing said in this thread. But, Idiots will still blame Selvig no matter what the truth is.

Spot on! If any of the morons ( see Original Poster) read this, perhaps you should see Brittany Lohman's quote where she said it was the SAME PRESS they saw the 1st half, but the team LOST THEIR COMPOSURE. You phucking people who blame Selvig don't know shit about basketball.

The girls just got outplayed in the 2nd half by a superior team. I believe the reason they were down by only 1 at half is because of Selvigs gameplan. The girls executed it amazingly well. They were able to slow the game down, not make any critical mistakes, and they made shots. In the 2nd half Pitt wore the Lady Griz down. They couldn't make a shot to save their life, had no inside presence because of their lack of size, and made a few mistakes because of the trap. This is not Selvigs fault. This is not the ladies fault. The credit goes to Pittsburgh for executing their game plan perfectly in the 2nd half. And let us not forget Pitt did beat Maryland by 30 earlier.

Another poster who will be satisfied with our "Participation ribbon" from the NCAA tourney.

And what is it with you people. You get mad if I blame the coach. Mad if I don't give enough credit to Pitt. But in your post above, you blame the Lady Griz themselves, they "lost their composure". And you say the other poster is spot on when he says Pitt was just too athletic. Really!? Then how did they handle what you say was the same press in the first half? How many ways do you want to have it?

This statement is exactly what we mean! It just shows that they were prepared. They executed their gameplan against a superior team. In the 2nd half they lost their composure (A Lady Griz player said this!) and did not execute at all. The results show.

Well said, the press was extremely effective because of the size and athleticism of Pitt.

... "I've told (the players) a couple times this year, we have nothing to lose," Gonzaga coach Kelly Graves said. "And a good team — and I think we're a good team — with nothing to lose can be a dangerous combination. That's what we hope happens (tonight)." Unlike Montana, which successfully slowed Pitt down during the first half of their first-round game Saturday night, Gonzaga likely will play at a different tempo.
... Minus that advantage, Gonzaga's situation isn't much different from where the Panthers found themselves last year — in the NCAA Women's Tournament for just the second time, with a chance to make program history. Gonzaga's coach knows it won't be easy. "Pitt's great; they really are," Graves said. "That second half (against Montana) is as good as I've seen anybody defend in a long time. We know it's going to be a challenge, and we have to play really well. "But we're capable; there's no question."

he is one of the best coaches this area has EVER seen. He is a legend. He had an answer. He cant help it when his players throw the ball without looking. The point of a full court is too get you too make quick ad bad choices. the girls are the ones who blew it. NOT HIM. and the fact that we shot a crappy FG % is why we lost. dont blame the coach.

If there was a weakness this year for the Lady Griz was that they didn't have great point guard play. Shante Johnson's game is still a litte raw in her first year under Selvig. Mandy is more effective as G/F combo. Anytime a team like Montana gets into the tournament they will consistlenty run into teams that are deep and athletic and Montana needs to hit their shots..something that didn't happen in the second half. It also doesn't help that there was never a Big Sky team that consistlently presses and is effective doing it.

The Coaches job is to first make sure that you develop your players and then to win your conference. Selvig does that better than anybody. He has established a program where he can get the best girls that this conference can have. He can virtually guarantee them that by the time they are seniors that they will have played in the NCAA tournament at least 2-3 times. From Mslacat's blog this incoming class may be Selvigs best in years.

The Griz are lucky to have Selvig.

As far as next year goes Portland State should be favored but the Lady Griz will be there at the end. The Lady Cats lose Garcia but should be strong again pushing for a top 3 finish.

One interesting idea for future Lady Griz teams might be working against a group of men when preparing for the NCAA's. We've heard and seen before that we can't prepare for the athleticism we see in the tourney. Why not go up against a group of men in practice? I've heard of other women's teams using this approach and even saw last weekend that Gonzaga's coach (I think it was Gonzaga) who's 6'5" had spent the week practicing against his team. If Selvig actively "recruited" a group of 7 to 10 men from campus intramural teams, he might just have a group that would really help prepare for the tournament.

I agree with most who say we are very fortunate to have a leader like Selvig for our program. This said, our program should be one that continues to strive for more than just a BSC championship and a blowout NCAA loss. South Dakota State seems a model that this year has gotten to about where the Lady Griz were 10 - 15 years ago. Didn't they just go Division 1 in the past year or two? Don't they primarily recruit in state and regionally? Aren't we willing to try to compete with a program like SDSU?

I'm not here to blast Selvig or the ladies on a fine year that ended in an unfortunate loss but sure hope the program isn't becoming one that is fully satisfied with endings like it's had the past two years.

You can't play against men in practice anymore. The Big Sky made that rule before last season. NAU used to use guys to practice against their girls.

I'm off of this forum. I just introduced a bit of an opinion that was not the mainstream. There were some who agreed and some who didn't. So it goes. I thank all of you who tried to keep it civil.

I would like to give a shout out to all of you called me a moron, or whatever. You guys have your reputations to uphold. I know some of you are fans fans, but is does not excuse your behavior.

To proudgrizsman, re/maxgriz, grizaremoregooder, mslacat, grizinabox and especially to you grizbacker1. I wish you well.

The opinion you introduced was taking shots at a man I am sure you do not know personally, pretty much knocking his intellect. So in my opinion, that is no different than me taking a shot at you and your lack of intellect.

He didn't seem to have an answer to the half court trap. That was an ass whipping.

I would like to see Cate as the head coach.

Nominated and clearly the stupidest post of the last 12 months ... or longer. And proof positive that some Griz fans are just spoiled brats.

I agree and all but about 15 other Universities that would love to have Selvig if he would ever leave.

If we played so well with them for 17 minutes, we should have been prepared to play with them for the other 23. For the record, I don't think robin should be fired and I enjoy my Griz immensely, even from afar. But monday morning quarterbacking isn't about making up crap. I am stating exactly what I saw AT THE GAME. The coaches missed key timeout opportunities to stop the slide. And they did look dumbfounded at what to do about the trap press. Didn't they do their homework on studying this team? Apparently not by the quote I put earlier from the Pitt player. Nothing I am saying is wrong if you are looking at it objectively. If it were a case of the coach teaching them how to be on offense against the press and them not doing what he said, then thats a different case. But thats now how I saw it. Whatever the case, something is broken. My God I hear way more complaining about the football coach, and he gets his team much further, I legitamately put out my complaints of what everyone witnessed and you'd think I'd assaulted Mother Teresa.

As much as I love all of the Griz programs, the lady griz cannot compete on the national level. I keep hoping but there's nothing there.....

Some day Selvig will decide to retire. It will be a sad day for all of college athletics, especially UM. There is no better representative for college athletics. UM is lucky to be associated with such a fine person.
