I realize it is common to "say burn your redshirt" but it is a bit misleading. NCAA rules give you 5 to play 4 so one of your years of eligibility would be mostly wasted if you were pressed into action late in the season when you were in the process of redshirting. You still have a redshirt year available but now only 4 to play 3. A potential example of a wasted year of eligibility in modern history was when Pflu brought in Jordan Johnson on 10/16 and he only accumulated these stats for that season:

PASSING GP Effic Cmp-Att-Int Pct Yards TD Long Avg/G
Jordan Johnson 6 110.0 15-20-0 75.0 44 1 15 7.3

But then of course that redshirt year came in handy later when he had it available to work through his legal quandary and then played the year after. So "burning a red shirt" might actually be a bit of a "red herring".

Oh ok gotcha. I was referencing young guys who are pressed into action early because of injury etc. They were intended to redshirt and mature mentally and physically and get a better grasp on the playbook, but for one reason or another have been pressed into action early. I see what you mean though.

An interesting comparison is the offenses that the EAGS and GRIZ have played against. Using Total Offense rankings as the metric here is how it breaks out. The GRIZ have not played an FBS offense and the only good offense you played dropped 42 points on you and isn't even a good passing team. Have you played any kind of a passing offense yet? Look at the Total Offense rankings below. Big difference in the competition the EAGS defense played against.

You could also interpret this as EWU has a terrible defense which improves the offensive ratings of every team they play, and Griz have a good defense that decreases the offensive ratings of every team they play.

True, but I believe UNI only had 2 more total yards against EWU than UM. 351/353 I believe. Also, Griz held UNI to 4/17 and EWU held them to 5/17 on 3rd down. We can pick and choose stats all day...the only thing that matters is both teams won and I'd agree that both UM and EWU played like crap against UNI, and still won...
